Lausanne, Switzerland, January 24, 2020 – The FIVB is delighted to announce the city of Zadar, Croatia as hosts of the 2020 Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup. After an open and transparent bidding process which closed on December 18, 2019, Croatia becomes the next country to host the prestigious Volleyball Challenger Cup in 2020, after Peru hosted in 2018 and 2019. The competition will take place at the Krešimir Ćosić Hall from June 24-28, 2020.
The FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup (VCC) was created as a competition to give emerging volleyball nations an opportunity to demonstrate their quality on the world stage. Since it was first introduced in 2018, the Cup has provided teams from across the world with an opportunity to qualify and compete in the prestigious FIVB Volleyball Nations League (VNL). The winning team of the Volleyball Challenger Cup 2020 will earn a coveted place in the 2021 FIVB VNL.
Following the announcement, FIVB President Dr. Ary S. Graça Fᵒ stated:
“As volleyball continues to grow globally, the FIVB is very excited to hold the third edition of the Women’s Volleyball Challenger Cup in Croatia. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring our beloved sport to new audiences. The beautiful city of Zadar will set the scene for what promises to be a truly spectacular Cup that will provide a great experience for volleyball fans in Croatia and around the world.”
Croatian Volleyball Federation President Mr. Ante Baković stated:
“This summer, Croatia will announce itself as a world-class destination for elite volleyball when it hosts the 2020 Challenger Cup. Six teams from all over the world will gather in Zadar, creating an opportunity for our National Federation to show the world what the Croatian national volleyball team means to our people. I am especially pleased that the younger generations, as well as all the fans of this sport, will have the opportunity to enjoy first class volleyball.
“We know that our national team will do its best and I firmly believe that the results will show that. The FIVB Challenger Cup in Zadar will be a ‘postcard’ sent across the whole world as a promotion of Croatia’s beauty and heritage. This kind of event will attract even more visitors to our beautiful country, so I invite all the fans to join us and support our national team this summer.”
The men’s edition of the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup 2020 will be held in Portugal, where the inaugural event was first hosted in 2018. The competition will take place in Gondomar, from June 24 -28, 2020, with six teams battling it out for a place in the 2021 FIVB VNL.
