Hosts Iran pulled off an upset 3-1 (25-21, 24-26, 25-19, 25-11) win with a convincing performance against Argentina, current world No.3 and bronze medallists at the previous edition in Tunisia two years ago, in the quarterfinals of the FIVB Volleyball Boys’ U19 World Championship in Tehran on Tuesday.
An impressive attacking performance of 72% (13/18) by Erfan Norouzi who shared the match high of 16 points with teammate Yousef Kazemi were key to Iran’s win – as was an overall strong blocking performance that yielded 13 points (to Argentina’s six).
Iran could have gone two sets up when they rallied from 20-23 down in the second to draw level, but all they could do was cancel two set points of the South Americans before Nahuel Garcia made the last kill to bring Argentina level at 1-1.
But it was downhill from there on for Iran who overwhelmed their opponents before Argentina completely collapsed in the fourth.
World No.5 Iran, seeking their third world title following their resounding successes in 2007 and 2017, go up against world No.14 Poland in the Wednesday’s semifinals.
