Baghdad, Iraq, May 30, 2022 – The final stage of Iraq Volleyball Super League came to a close on Monday with South Gas Sports Club reigning supreme after a 3-0 (25-12, 25-21, 25-18) rout of Al-Jaish.
The Iraq Volleyball Federation had invited the Islamic Republic of Iran Volleyball Federation Secretary General Mr Milad Taghavi, and IRIVF International Affairs Director Sarah Hessaby as guests of honour to watch the final match at the competition site. Both sides also discussed the further cooperation to make use of the valuable experiences of Iraq to promote volleyball within the country.
Regarding the Iraq Super League final clash, South Gas Sports Club had on May 20 completed their campaign in the 2022 Asian Men’s Club Championship in Tehran, where they returned with the seventh place to later prepare for the league, which was postponed for one month.
Alaa Khalaf, head coach of South Gas who’s working so hard to promote volleyball in Iraq, said, “I have dreams and will follow them. My dreams are not just finishing as the champions in the Iraq Super League and participating in the Asian Club Championship.
“There are a lot of volleyball talents in Iraq and I do care about them. We should use Iran’s experiences to get better in any aspect including turning the volleyball as brand and make it a number one family sport in Iraq,” Khalaf, functioning as head coach of the Iraq men’s national team, added.
Alaa Khalaf will continue his mission with the national team in Iraq and will stay in close contact with the men’s U21 team of Iraq with their new Italian head coach Vincenzo Nacci.
Mr Adnan Dirjal, Minister of Youth and Sports of Iraq, Mohammed Vadi , Club Manager of South Gas, Hazim Mohammed, the NOC Iraq President, Mr Jamel Al-Abadi , President of Iraq Volleyball Federation, were also in attendance along with some other senior officials from the parliament.
Mr Adnan Dirjal presented memorial of Sports Ministry to Milad Taghavi and Sarah Hessaby before the start of the awarding ceremony.
The Iranian guests are to hold two more meetings to complete their cooperation courses in the new season.
