KAZAKHSTAN NET FIRST WIN IN ASIAN WOMEN’S U18 CHAMPIONSHIP AFTER DAZZLING 3-0 AGAINST PHILIPPINES

Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, June 7, 2022 – After disappointing 1-3 loss to Chinese Taipei the previous day, Kazakhstan regained their form to overpower Philippines 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-15) and hand the lacklustre rivals the second loss on Day 2 of the pool round-robin preliminaries in the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship at the Nakhon Pathom Sports Center Gymnasium on Tuesday.

Sofiya Gorbachev, Ayaulym Turdykhanova, and Aruzhan Berkimbay all chipped in with 10 points apiece for Kazakhstan, while Viane Rhose Almendralejo led the Philippines with 9 points from her powerful spikes.

Kazakhstan got off to a solid start in the first set, utilizing their height advantage at the net to overwhelm Philippines with scintillating blocks and sharp cross-court attacks. With the 185cm-tall Ayaulym Turdykhanova a constant threat from spike range, the momentum was with the Kazakh side as they took the closely-contested first set 26-24.

After such a lamentable opening, Philippines started the second set looking far more settled as impressive hustling from captain Ana Fracessca Hermosura. Still, the Kazakhs proved steadier at the final assault for the 25-19 win in the set.

In the third set, Kazakhstan regained the initiative as they quickly led from start to finish for an exceptional 25-15 win. Following a bit of this letdown, Philippines have already suffered two losses in a row in this top-tier championship.

“My players are very young. Most of them are from 13-15 years old. We did not have time to have a good selection and bring more talented players. However, I am satisfied with them at this age and the experience is great for us here,” Philippines’ head coach Lee Jerry commented.

“My players need more work and harmony. One-month training is not enough at all. Today, they played better. Many of these players are able to play at the junior and senior levels in the future”, Kazakhstan’s head coach, Adlet Takenov said after the match.
