AFGHANISTAN STUN HOSTS BANGLADESH AS TURKMENISTAN MARCH INTO FINAL UNBEATEN

Dhaka, Bangladesh, October 27, 2025 – The sixth day of the CAVA Cup for Men 2025 served up a feast of volleyball drama at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka. With the tournament approaching its grand finale, the intensity soared and emotions ran high as fans erupted in cheers from the stands to witness three thrilling encounters – each telling its own story of precision, redemption, and surprise.

Sri Lanka opened the day with a commanding performance against Nepal, sweeping the match in straight sets.

Captain H. Deepthi Ranawaka led by example, with G. Wasanthapriya and A. Don Perera executing a near-flawless game plan. Their sharp serves, quick transitions, and rock-solid defense left Nepal struggling to find rhythm.

Despite spirited efforts from Rabin Nagarkoti and Arjun Nepali, Sri Lanka’s cohesion proved too much to handle.

In just over an hour, Sri Lanka clinched their third win of the tournament, keeping their medal hopes well and truly alive.

Next on court, the unbeaten Turkmenistan juggernaut continued its dominant run, overpowering Maldives in straight sets. From the opening serve, Dovranbek Rahimov, Orazsahet Seyitgeldiyev, and Ylham Allaberdiyew unleashed relentless attacks, while setter Arslanbek Iskandarov masterfully orchestrated the offense with pinpoint precision.

Maldives showed flashes of resistance through Hussain Shamaail and Fairooz Adam, but could not sustain the pressure against Turkmenistan’s consistency and firepower.

With yet another straight-set triumph, Turkmenistan stormed into the gold medal match, maintaining their spotless record of five wins in as many games.

But the real drama unfolded in the evening clash.

Before a passionate crowd of over 450 spectators, Afghanistan shocked host nation Bangladesh in a four-set thriller. Bangladesh started brightly, taking the opening set and fueling hopes of a home victory, but Afghanistan quickly turned the tide.

Ghulamrasool Haidari and Sabawoon Wardak dominated at the net with explosive spikes and timely blocks, while Mohammad Imran Niazai stepped up in crucial moments. The Afghan squad held their composure under pressure, sealing the next three sets to complete a memorable comeback.

Despite valiant performances from Horosit Biswas and Ratul Ahmed, Bangladesh faltered with costly unforced errors at key moments. Afghanistan’s emotional victory not only silenced the home crowd but also propelled them into the final, setting up a high-voltage showdown with Turkmenistan for the coveted gold.

As Day 6 concluded, the standings painted a clear picture: Turkmenistan led the table with 14 points from five straight wins. Three teams shared identical records of three wins and two losses, but Afghanistan took second place with 10 points, followed by Sri Lanka with 9 and Bangladesh with 8. Nepal collected 4 points from one victory and four defeats to finish fifth, while Maldives rounded out the standings without winning a single set.

All eyes now turn to Day 7 — the grand finale. Nepal and Maldives will contest the 5th–6th classification match, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will battle for bronze, and Turkmenistan will face Afghanistan in a high-stakes gold medal showdown.

The atmosphere in Dhaka is electric, anticipation is mounting, and volleyball fans across the region are gearing up for one last day of unforgettable action.
