Doha, Qatar, May 1, 2025 – Al-Rayyan, which recently conquered the men’s Qatar Cup trophy for the 13th time in the club’s history, made much of the impact again as the powerhouses captured the prestigious Amir Cup for the 2024-25 season for the 17th time in history following their dramatic 3-1 (25-17, 25-20, 25-27, 25-22) victory over Al-Wakrah in the Thursday evening’s final showdown at the Aspire Hall.
The awarding ceremony was jointly presided by H.E. Mr Mohammed bin Youssef Al-Mana, First Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, and Mr Ali Ghanem Al-Kuwari, President of the Qatar and West Asia Volleyball Associations.
Al-Rayyan, which will strut their stuff in the inaugural AVC Men’s Champions League in Osaka and Kyoto, Tokyo between May 11 and 18, 2025, received the championship trophy and gold medals, while Al-Wakrah secured silver medals. The match officials were also honored for their contribution.
Following the match, Al-Rayyan received QAR 500,000 prize money, while Al-Wakrah took home QAR 250,000 in recognition of their outstanding performance.
The final was played in front of a large crowd and amid a festive atmosphere, reflecting the significance and prestige of the tournament within the Qatari sports scene. The Qatar Volleyball Association also allocated several prizes for fans in attendance.
Al-Rayyan reached the final after an impressive campaign, defeating Al-Arabi in the quarterfinals and overcoming Qatar SC in the semifinals. Al-Wakrah, on the other hand, delivered a heroic performance throughout the tournament, stunning Al-Police in the semifinals to reach their first-ever Amir Cup final.
With the Thursday’s victory, Al-Rayyan now hold 17 Amir Cup titles, solidifying their status as the second most successful club in the tournament’s history.
Al-Arabi remain the record-holders with 23 titles. Qatar SC came in third place overall with four titles, with Al-Police in fourth position after claiming one.
Mr Ali Ghanem Al-Kuwari praised the high level of performance from all teams this season, and congratulated Al-Rayyan for sweeping three major national titles this year: the League, the Qatar Cup, and now the Amir Cup.
He emphasized that the success of the tournament was made possible through fruitful collaboration between clubs and the strong support of fans and the media, adding, “We will continue working to further develop Qatari volleyball according to the highest standards.”
Al-Rayyan head coach, Sergio Luis Cunha, expressed great pride in his players, saying: “They showed true championship character and full commitment throughout the tournament. Winning the Amir Cup is a great honor that comes as a result of teamwork and precise planning. I congratulate the management, the fans, and everyone who supported the team. We look forward to achieving more successes in the future.”
