ASIAN MEN’S U20 CHAMPIONSHIP SET TO GET UNDERWAY IN INDONESIA ON JULY 23

Surabaya, Indonesia, July 22, 2024 – The action-packed 22nd Asian Men’s 20 Volleyball Championship is set to kick off on Tuesday here at Jawa Pos Arena (Main Hall) and Gelora Pancasila (Second Hall), with a strong field of 16 teams vying for top honour.

The topflight championship, which is due to be held between July 23 and 30, serves as the Asia’s qualification tournament for the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship. With current world champions Iran automatically booking their place, top four teams in the eight-day tournament in Surabaya will also secure their berths in the next year’s world meet.

Teams were divided into four pools of four teams apiece, with hosts Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Australia and Hong Kong China in Pool A. Qatar, Chinese Taipei, defending and seven-time champions Iran and former four-time winners China are in Pool B, regarded as Group of Death, while Pool C consists of former three-time champions Japan, Kuwait, India and Bangladesh and Pool D comprises Thailand, Kazakhstan, former six-time winners Korea and Vietnam.

Teams will contest the pool round-robin preliminaries from July 23 to 25, with only top two teams from each pool at the end of the pool play advancing to the round of last 8 to contest Pool E (teams from Pool A and Pool C) and Pool F (teams from Pool B and Pool D). Teams finishing third- and fourth places in each pool will be relegated to classification round for 9th-16th places to contest Pool G (teams from Pool A and Pool C) and Pool H (teams from Pool B and Pool D).

After the two-day playoffs in Pool E and Pool F, only top two teams from each pool will qualify for the cross semifinals, while teams finishing third- and fourth places will contest the 5th-8th playoffs. Similar to Pool E and Pool F, teams in Pool G and Pool H will also contest the two-day playoffs, where top two teams from each pool will next enter the classification round for 9th-12th and the remaining lower-ranked teams will contest the 13th-16th playoff encounters.

 

To make sure all is set ahead of the official kickoff, the joint meeting was conducted on Sunday at Novotel Samator East Surabaya Hotel, jointly chaired by Control Committee Chairman and Technical Delegate Mr Shanrit Wongprasert, himself AVC Executive Director, and Competition Director Mr Reginald Nelwan.

 

Also in attendance were Technical Sub Committees Mr Raditia Rahmat Darwis from Indonesia and Mrs Shek Tsui Wai Fun, Marina from Hong Kong, China, Referee Delegate Mr Songsak Chareonpong from Thailand, Referee Sub Committees Mr Takashi Shimoyama from Japan and Mr S Beny Coonghe from India, Medical Delegate Dr Rueangsak Siriphol from Thailand, VIS Delegate Mr Tirto Apriyanto from Indonesia and AVC Official Photographer Mr Bernadus Wijayaka from Indonesia.

On the local side, attending the meeting included court managers, referee manager, IT Manager, VIS Supervisor, Accommodation Director, Transportation Director and Facility Managers.

On behalf of AVC President Mrs Rita Subowo, CC President Mr Shanrit welcomed all attendants and expressed his appreciation over great contributions of Indonesian Volleyball Federation (PBVSI) and Surabaya and all local organisers for their thorough preparation. He also talked about the preparation tasks and what to be done ahead of the kickoff on Tuesday.

After that, all Control Committee Members and local organisers made the final inspection for the training sites and both competition halls and found that all gets set for the championship.

The preliminary inquiry was also conducted on Sunday evening.

On Monday, all accompanying referees underwent the Referee Clinic theoretically and practically.
The clinic ended on a high note, with referees showcasing their capabilities and excellence during the clinic. The video challenge system will also be used in this championship and the preparation task on the equipment installation has worked pretty well. 

To ensure that all is set for the top-tier biennial competition regarding the teams’ participation, host country’s roles, competition regulations and the organisers’ planned management in all aspects, the General Technical Meeting was conducted later on Monday evening, with CC President Mr Shanrit presiding. 

All participating teams  had been notified of the technical matters from Control Committee President and Technical Delegate Mr Shanrit, refereeing issues from Referee Delegate Mr Songsak Chareonpong and medical matters from Medical Delegate Dr Rueangsak Siriphol. Updated information on match schedule, match protocol and other relevant matters were also raised for awareness, consideration and further discussion during the meeting.
