AVC WOMEN’S BEACH TOUR PHUYEN OPEN SEMIFINAL MATCHUPS REVEALED

Phu Yen, Vietnam, April 27, 2025 – Australia’s Jasmine Flemming/Stefanie Fejes will clash with Thailand’s Taravadee Naraphornrapat/Worapeerachayakorn Kongphopsarutawadee and another Australian pair, Elizabeth Alchin/Georgia Johnson lock horns with Kiwis Shaunna Polley/Olivia MacDonald in the much-anticipated semifinals of the AVC Women’s Beach Tour Phu Yen Open at the L’Aurora Phu Yen Beach here on Monday morning.

The round of 16 and quarterfinals ended in dramatic fashion on Sunday afternoon, with two teams from Australia and one team apiece from New Zealand and Thailand through to the semifinals following their convincing wins against tough opponents in respective encounters.

Top seeds Fleming/Fejes, setting their sights on winning their second AVC Beach Tour this year after a top podium finish at the 2nd Nuvali Open in Philippines early this month, struggled to beat Thailand’s Patcharaporn Seehawong/Samitta Simarongnam in exhausting three-setter 21-14, 16-21, 16-14 in the round of 16 and again faced a daunting task in the quarterfinals, where they overcame a dismal start to beat Japan’s Asami Shiba/Reika Murakami with a comeback 2-1 (11-21, 21-17, 15-9) win.

The Australian tandem will next battle it out with Taravadee/Worapeerachayakorn in the semifinals. The Thai team, third place at the 2023 Asian Championship in Fuzhou, China, demolished Kazakhs Laura Kabulbekova/Nadezhda Ivanchenko 2-0 (21-17, 21-14) in the round of 16.

The Thai side made it two in a row following their 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) victory against China’s gold medallists at the 2024 Wuhan Qingshan Futures Yan Xu/Zhou Mingli in the quarterfinals.

For the 2021 Asian champions Taravadee/Worapeerachayakorn, the Monday morning’s semifinal clash against Fleming/Fejes will be a bronze-medal rematch of the recent 24th Samila Open in Songkhla, Thailand. There, Fleming/Fejes powered past the Thai pair 2-0 in the third-place playoff for bronze medal on April 16, while the Thai duo look to a revenge match here in the Phu Yen Open.

New Zealand’s second seeds Polley/MacDonald, who snatched gold at the 2025 GJ Gardner Homes NZ Beach Tour in Mt Maunganui and whose performance at the 24th Samila Open matched their second-place finish achieved at the recent 2nd Nuvali Open in Philippines, got the day off to a great start following their dramatic 2-1 (21-12, 18-21, 15-8) win in the round of 16 match against Japan’s 9th seeds Ren Matsumoto/Non Matsumoto, to whom they lost 0-2 in the final showdown at the 24th Samila Open.

In the afternoon quarterfinals, the Kiwis proved too much for China’s Yu Tong/Jiang Kaiyue to handle, eliminating the bronze medallists at the recent Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Songkhla Futures, 2-0 (21-14, 21-16) to next go up against Australia’s third seeds Alchin/Johnson on Monday.

The Aussies completely dashed hopes of the hosts nation on Sunday, first seeing off Vietnamese Chau Ngoc Lan/Mai Hong Hanh 2-0 (21-15, 22-20) in the round of 16 and knocking another Vietnamese pair, Nguyen Thi Thanh Tram/Nguyen Le Thi Tuong Vy, out of the women’s only event 2-0 (21-15, 21-17) in the afternoon quarterfinals.

The semifinals on Monday will commence at 8.30am local time, with the third-place playoff match and the final showdown being held at 2.30pm and 3.30pm respectively, followed shortly after end of the final match by the awards presentation and the closing ceremony.
