AVC WOMEN’S NATIONS CUP VIETNAM 2025 REACHES DECISIVE STAGE AS TEAMS MAKE FINAL PUSH FOR SEMIFINAL SPOTS ON LAST DAY OF PRELIMS 

Hanoi, Vietnam, June 11, 2025 – The inaugural AVC Women’s Nations Cup reached a thrilling climax at Dong Anh Gymnasium as Vietnam and Kazakhstan extended their unbeaten runs, firmly positioning themselves for semifinal berths heading into the last day of the pool preliminaries.

   

Hosts Vietnam, successive two-time AVC Challenge Cup champions, showcased their depth by resting key players Tran Thi Thanh Thuy and Nguyen Thi Bich Tuyen but still comfortably sweeping India 3-0 (25-19, 25-7, 25-8). With this result, Vietnam cemented their position atop Pool A with a perfect 3-0 record and full nine points, remarkably without dropping a single set.

Three Vietnamese players scored in double digits. Outside hitter Vi Thi Nhu Quynh led with 17 points (13 attacks, 2 blocks, 2 aces), while Hoang Thi Kieu Trinh and Pham Thi Hien added 10 points apiece. India struggled offensively, with opposite spiker Anagha Radhakrishnan managing 9 points and Shalini Saravanan contributing 6.

 

Vietnam dominated in every aspect, leading in attacks (39–23), blocks (6–0), and aces (8–0), while capitalizing on opponent errors (22–11).

With their semifinal spot virtually secured, Vietnam will face Australia on Thursday in their final pool match. Meanwhile, India sit in fifth place with one point from three straight losses.

Chinese Taipei, currently second in Pool A with six points (2-1), enjoyed a rest day and will face India in their final match on Thursday.

Hong Kong, China completed their preliminary campaign on a high, narrowly edging Australia 3-2 (25-20, 25-19, 18-25, 18-25, 16-14) to finish third with four points.

Outside hitters Chim Wing Lam and Shum Lam starred for Hong Kong, China, each scoring 21 points. Despite a commendable performance, Australia fell short in key moments, with Cameron Zajer (18 points), Kayla Cantrill (17), and Ella Schabort (17) leading their scoring. Australia are currently fourth and now face the formidable task of challenging Vietnam on Thursday.

In Pool B, Kazakhstan continued their commanding form, defeating Iran 3-1 (25-14, 25-18, 22-25, 26-24) to remain unbeaten with 12 points from four wins.

Outside hitter Tatyana Nikitina led the charge with 15 points, supported by Saniya Balagazinova (11) and captain Sana Anarkulova (9). Iran fought valiantly, particularly in attack (51–41 advantage in kills), with Masoumeh Ghadami Tabaghdehi scoring 15 points, but Kazakhstan’s superiority in blocking (14–3) and opponent errors (33–20) proved decisive.

Kazakhstan will take on the Philippines on Thursday, while Iran (third place, seven points) face winless Mongolia in their final pool match.

The Philippines boosted their semifinal hopes by sweeping New Zealand 3-0 (25-17, 25-21, 25-18), moving into second place with 10 points (3-1). 

Outside hitters Vanessa Gandler and Eya Laure led with 11 points each, while Alyssa Solomon chipped in with 11. New Zealand’s Charlton Hunter Vail scored 11 in the loss. The Kiwis remained in fifth place with two points from four matches.

Elsewhere in Pool B, Indonesia registered their first win of the tournament, defeating Mongolia 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-23).

Ersandrina Devega Salsabila was outstanding with a match-high 21 points, with Medial Stiovanny Yoku and Ajeng Viona Adelea adding 14 and 13 points, respectively. Mongolia remained winless with only one point.

Thursday marks the final day of the preliminary round, with only top two teams from each pool advancing to the cross semifinals. The remaining teams will compete for 5th–11th places in the classification round.
