Urmia, Tehran, August 25, 2023 – Determined Bahrain, loaded with more potential players, bounced back from losing the first two sets to stun Thailand 3-2 (17-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-10) in their Ranking 7-10 encounter in the 22nd Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship at Al-Ghadir Hall 1 on Friday.
Following the win, Bahrain will go up against Pakistan, which had beaten Indonesia 3-2 in the other Ranking 7-10 match earlier. Thailand are due to take on Indonesia to vie for 9th position.
It was the first win in this topflight championship for Bahrain. Another win of the team was recorded in the walkover win against Mongolia, the team which earlier withdrew ahead of the kickoff of this championship.
In the Friday’s match, Md Sujon chipped in with 19 points for Bahrain including 13 attacks. Napadet Bhinijdee led Thailand with 28 points including 25 attacks.
Thailand, spearheaded by powerful Napadet Bhinijdee, made a solid start and caught fire shortly after that. With Anut Promchan and Anurak Phanram attacking spectacularly at the wing, the Thai team clinched the first two sets 25-17, 25-20.
Fighting all out with their backs against the wall, Bahrain grabbed the chance to counter-attack and block effectively to win the next two sets 25-23, 25-21 as the Thais were riddled with several unforced mistakes.
Bahrain came back much stronger in the fifth set. Mohamed Yaqoob and Naser Anan were devastating as they joined forces in penetrating the Thai defence with their powerful attacks to help Bahrain clinch the decider 15-10 and match.
