Manama, Bahrain, July 28, 2024 – Hosts Bahrain were dealt a disheartening 2-3 (23-25, 25-18, 25-19, 33-35, 12-15) loss to Hong Kong, China on Sunday night in their first assignment of the 15th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship at Isa Sport City Hall C.
In a marathon match – one that saw the scores reach the mid-30s in a nail-biting fourth set – Hong Kong, China were able to eke out the tight result for a winning start in Pool A.
The Bahrainis came away with a consolation point, one that may prove crucial in their bid to make it to the Elite Eight.
After losing the opening frame, Bahrain came alive in the second and were not to be denied in the third. Hong Kong, China were then on the brink of defeat late in the fourth set, but grind things out to stay alive, saving a number of match points and sending the contest into the decisive tie-break.
There, they took advantage of their rivals’ deflated spirits and did enough to seal the final result after a two-and-a-half-hour battle.
Hong Kong, China were able to overcome the fantastic 40-point effort of Bahrain’s Jassim Madan, who had a monster individual performance. Ali Sultan added 18 points.
Leading Hong Kong, China was Ching Kin Ko, who himself had an outstanding showing with 36 points. Yiu Cheong Cheung contributed 12 for the winners in the contest.
