Bahrain went down in well-fought four-setter 25-19, 20-25, 18-25, 21-25 against Cuba on Saturday to complete their first-round Pool B encounters in fourth place in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Alexei Ramirez Masso and Jose Miguel Gutierrez Suarez handed Cuba 16 points apiece, while Ebrahim Sayed Amin similarly scored 16 points on Bahrain’s losing effort.
Bader Husain, libero of Bahrain: “I am thankful to god for everything; I am thankful to my team and the staff. We played so well in the first set today, but after that we made some mistakes. In the end, the small details made the difference.”
Christian Thondike, setter of Cuba: “This match was an easy one. It would have been even easier for us in this championship if we had more time to train together. Almost none of the team lives in Cuba, because we train with our club teams. For this reason, we only had a week and a half to prepare together. That’s why our game is not at such a high level, but we still managed to win today.”
Bahrain have yet won a match in Pool B, going down 0-3 to Bulgaria and 0-3 to Poland in the first two matches earlier, to come in fourth place. They will next join third place Cuba in the 9th-16th classification round in Pool H, where they are due to take on Canada and Cameroon, the teams finishing third and fourth places in Pool D.
