Sri Lanka attacks Uzbekistan

In the men’s event, Bangladesh, fresh from their first victory following a 3-0 demolition of Nepal in their previous match, remained in great form to brush off Maldives in straight sets 25-14, 25-19, 25-22 for two in a row.

Nepal recovered from the opening-day loss at the hands of the host side to taste their first victory on Friday after a comeback 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-21, 25-23) win against Uzbekistan.

Sri Lanka powered past Uzbekistan on the first day to enjoy a rest day on Friday.

After two days, hosts Bangladesh moved atop the men’s standing with 6 points from two successive wins, followed by Nepal and Sri Lanka with similar 3 points. However, the Sri Lankans played only one match which they won 3-0, while Nepal claimed one win against one loss.

In the women’s competition, in-form Uzbekistan made it two in succession. Fresh from beating Maldives, which finished 14th at the Asian Senior Women’s Championship in 2017, in straight sets on Thursday, Uzbekistan continued their impressive form the following day after pulling off a lop-sided 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-14) win against hosts Bangladesh on Friday.

Nepal also made their mark to win two straight matches. After narrowly beating Sri Lanka 3-2 on the first day, Nepal faced no issues in shutting out Maldives in a totally one-sided affair 25-11, 25-9, 25-5 on Friday.

Kyrgyzstan celebrated their first 3-0 win over hosts Bangladesh on Thursday, but lost their touch the following day to go down in straight sets 15-25, 14-25, 13-25 to Sri Lanka, which finished 13th in the 2019 Asian Senior Women’s Championship.

Uzbekistan captured the pole position with 6 points from two straight wins, with Nepal  in close second position with 5 points from two wins in a row. Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan are trailing in third and fourth places with 4 and 3 points respectively.

On Saturday, Bangladesh were due to take on Nepal, Sri Lanka to go up against Maldives and Kyrgyzstan to face Uzbekistan in the women’s event. The men’s competition saw Uzbekistan play Maldives and Sri Lanka meet Nepal.

Participating teams in both men’s and women’s teams are competing in single round-robin preliminaries, with top two teams setting up a final clash for gold medal. Teams finishing third and fourth places will battle it out in the third-place playoff for bronze medal.
