Bangkok, Thailand, October 29, 2020 – Unbeaten Beijing edged Zhejiang 3-1 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 25-21) to capture the title at this year’s Chinese Men’s Volleyball Championship in Zhangzhou, xinhuanet.com reported on Wednesday.
Both teams remained unbeaten until they stepped into the court of the final. In the first set, Beijing, fielding more experienced team players, maintained their leading position through effective blocks, winning it 25-20.
The two teams traded the lead over and over in the second set and the gap remained no more than two points throughout the set. Led by Zhang Jingyin, Zhejiang showed their tenacity and ended the set 23-25.
Beijing lagged behind at the start of the third set, but they managed to level the score 10-10 thanks to Liu Libin’s aggressive serves and blocks, before taking the third set 25-21.
The fourth set saw more ups and downs as the score levelled several times and the lead changed hands, but with more consistent performance, Beijing sealed the set for the final victory.
“It is the first time that my team, mostly young players, played in the final,” said Wu Sheng, head coach of Zhejiang, “so we made many mistakes and we should have been twice as good as we were tonight.”
“It was a tough game since Zhejiang is a very strong opponent,” said Jiang Chuan, captain of Beijing. “Aside from winning the championship, we have also gotten more practice and spotted some of our weak areas for improvement.”
In other games on Wednesday, Shandong brushed aside the defending champions Jiangsu 3-0 to claim third place, while Guangdong routed Sichuan 3-0 to finish fifth.
