VTV Vinh Dien claim the women’s title
Reigning champions Bien Phong bounced back to beat Sanest Khanh Hoa 3-1 (15-25, 25-12, 25-22, 25-21) in the men’s final showdown on Sunday to retain the men’s title, as VTV Bin Dien Long An reigned supreme in the women’s event after 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17) demolition of LP Bank Ninh Vinh in the Hung Vuong King Cup 2024 in Viet Tri – Phu Tho, Vietnam.
Traditionally, the top 8 men’s and women’s teams in the first round of the Vietnam National Volleyball Championships stand their chances to test their mettle in Hung Vuong King Cup Volleyball Tournament, an annual competition which has attracted a large crowd of spectators. However, this year, the organisers decided to select only top four in the men’s and women’s teams of the 2023 Vietnam National Volleyball Championships to participate in a single elimination of the Hung Vuong King Cup 2024 between April 11 and 14.
In the men’s event, Sanest Khanh Hoa outplayed Ha Tinh in straight sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-18, with Bien Phong demolishing The Cong in three-setter 25-21, 27-25, 25-19. The Cong picked up bronze medal after a convincing 3-0 (25-16, 25-21, 25-18) shutout of Ha Tinh in the third-place playoff clash.
The Sunday’s showdown saw Bien Phong make a poor start for an upset 15-25 loss in the first set, but their supporters came to life after that. Bien Phong, importing powerful Wanchai Tabwises from Thailand, turned the electric atmosphere inside the competition venue into one of the absolute joys with three sets in a row 25-12, 25-22, 25-21 for the eventual 3-1 victory, making the crowd erupt in celebration.
It was another success of Bien Phong in their 2023 final rematch with Sanest Khanh Hoa, the only Vietnamese Club team in history to advance to the semifinals in the Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship (2018 in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar). At the previous edition, Bien Phong also pulled off a dramatic 3-1 win against the same rivals.
Meanwhile, in the women’s competition, LP Bank Ninh Binh got their campaign off to an impressive start with 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 25-21) win against Thong tin, while VTV Binh Dien Long An downed Hoa chat Duc Giang with comeback 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-16, 25-19) win.
VTV Binh Dien Long An went on to capture the women’s crown following their exceptional 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 19-25, 25-17) win against LP Bank Ninh Binh in the Saturday’s final clash. The third-place playoff, which was held on Sunday, saw Hoa chat Duc Giang recover from first-set loss to beat Thong tin 3-1 (21-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20) for bronze medal.
In the awards presentation, Bien Phong and VTV Binh Dien Long An received the Champions’ Trophy in the respective men’s and women’s event, while Individual awards were presented to the Best Opposite Spiker, Best Setter and Best Libero.
