Urmia, Iran, August 24, 2023 – China’s efforts at the 22nd Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship have reached great heights on Thursday when they stole the limelight with stunning 3-1 (21-25, 25-22, 28-26, 25-18) win against Korea in the elite Top 6 at Al-Ghadir Hall 1.
As powerhouses China will next go up against hosts Iran in the semifinals, Korea will fight for the 5th place against Chinese Taipei.
The Friday’s highly-anticipated clash between China and Iran will be a semifinal rematch of the previous edition two years ago in Chiba and Funabashi in Japan, where China succumbed to 1-3 loss to giants Iran.
Against China on Thursday, the Koreans won the well-fought first set 25-21, but made a poor start in the second set to trail China with four points behind at 15-19 and could not regain their form. With Zhang Guanhua methodically tearing the Koreans defence apart, China made their mark. Their resilience was showcased through spectacular blocking and explosive attacks as Korea went down 22-25.
Leveling 1-1, China continued their brilliant form in the third set, while the Koreans tried to bring their fight back on track for a comeback. The on-going battle heated up with both sides fighting neck and neck toward the finish. China took the hotly-contesting set 28-26.
Winning two sets in a row, China remained strong offensively in the fourth set. Their consistent play and more determination worked out pretty well as the Chinese won the thrilling set 25-18 and match.
