Tehran, Iran, August 21, 2022 – China, which finished sixth place at the previous edition in Tabriz, disposed of Kuwait in thrilling straight sets 25-17, 25-22, 25-18 in the 5th-8th playoffs match in the 14th Asian Men’s U18 Volleyball Championship at the Federation Hall on Sunday.
The convincing win allowed China a chance to contest the 5th-6th playoff match they had already fought in at the previous edition. This time, they will fight it out with the winners in the match between Thailand and Chinese Taipei.
Against Kuwait on Sunday, China mixed the excellent offensive combinations of Taier Chi’s spectacular spikes and Gao Yning’s good blocks to take the first two sets 25-17, and 25-22.
Holding a 2-0 advantage, China marched on their good show in the third set to come up with quick attacks and solid defence, allowing Kuwait tough times to score. China went on their combination attacks and good teamwork to clinch the set 25-18 and match.
Taier Chi chipped in with 15 points for China, while captain Ahmad Almutairi scored 7 points for Kuwait with no player recording double digits.
“Today’s match was difficult considering the defeat we had yesterday and the spirit the team had for today’s match,” said China’s head coach Gong Zaifeng.
Commenting on their next 5th-6th playoff match against either Chinese Taipei or Thailand, he said, “No difference who we are playing with. We are intending to improve our rank and get higher,” he added.
