CHINA REIGN SUPREME IN ASIAN EASTERN ZONAL WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 3-1 VICTORY OVER CHINESE TAIPEI

Korea Outclass Hong Kong, China to Claim Bronze

Hong Kong, China, August 31, 2025 – The 2025 Asian Eastern Zonal Women’s Volleyball Championship (2025AEZ), organized by the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China, concluded on Sunday at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium. Defending champions China showcased resilience and depth, overcoming a spirited challenge from Chinese Taipei to seal a 3-1 (24–26, 26–24, 25–22, 25–19) triumph and retain their title. Earlier, Korea outplayed hosts Hong Kong, China in straight sets to secure the bronze medal.

China entered the final with an unbeaten record, having swept all previous matches without dropping a set. Despite captain Li Chenxuan sustaining an injury in the semifinals, she returned to the starting lineup for the championship decider.

In the opening set, Chinese Taipei stunned the favorites with aggressive play. Yeh Yu-Wen and Hsu Wan-Yun combined to erase China’s early lead, with Hsu tallying 9 points including a decisive ace to level at 19–19. After edging ahead 24–23, Chinese Taipei sealed the set 26–24 through Liu Shuang-Ling’s clinical finish.

The second set mirrored the intensity, with Chinese Taipei’s defense holding firm and tying the score at 24–24. 

This time, China responded through clutch plays by Ji Yuxiao and Zhao Zhexi, who delivered consecutive points to level the match 1-1.

In the third set, China trailed 7–10 after reception errors but regrouped behind the leadership of Li and Zhao. Although Chinese Taipei fought back through Chang Yi-Chi and top scorer Tsai Yu-Chun (match-high 19 points), a late error from Chang gave China the set 25–22.

The fourth set saw China assert full control. With dominant serving that fueled their blocking system, they registered seven block points in the set. Li Hanyu and Ji Yuxiao spearheaded the attack, while Chinese Taipei faltered with 10 errors. China capitalized to close the match 25–19, completing a 3-1 comeback and successfully defending their Asian Eastern Zonal crown.

In the bronze-medal match, Hong Kong, China made a spirited start against Korea, holding them close at 8–10. However, Korea’s superior serve reception and offensive variety soon broke down the hosts’ rhythm, taking the first set 25–15.

Hong Kong, China introduced Hau Kai Wai, Suen Yee Tung, and Tang Sum Yuen in the second set to strengthen blocking and attack. Outside hitters Chim Wing Lam and Shum Lam produced key points, while libero Cheung Hiu Nok, Michelle delivered crucial defensive saves. Despite narrowing the deficit, Korea prevailed 25–22.

Korea take the third place

In the third, Korea controlled proceedings through balanced wing attacks. Lee Yeonjae (12 points), Choi Yuni (11), and Park Hyeon-ju (11) led the charge, while Chim Wing Lam matched the game’s scoring high with 12 points for the hosts. Yet Korea’s consistency proved decisive, sealing the set 25–14 and a 3-0 victory, with Hong Kong, China finishing in fourth place.

The championship concluded with the Awarding Ceremony, attended by distinguished guests including Mr. NG Sau Kei, Wilfred, GBS, JP, President of the Volleyball Association of Hong Kong, China, Mr. Yuen Lei, President of the Eastern Asia Volleyball Association, Miss Chui Lo, Winnie, JP, Deputy Director of Leisure & Cultural Services (Leisure Services), and Ms. Marina Tsui, President of the Control Committee of the 2025AEZ, alongside representatives of the event’s sponsors and partners.

Individual awards were also presented, with Xie Jiyang of China receiving the Best Coach Award, and captain Li Chenxuan of China being honored as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
