Pasig City, Philippines, August 23, 2022 – Five-time winners China continued to maintain a clean slate, as they took their third straight win in the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women. Chinese Taipei and Vietnam likewise won against their respective opponents to complete Day 3 of the competition on Tuesday.
Spectators trooped to the PhilSports Arena in support of home team Philippines, as they faced the Chinese side. The straight-sets win, 3-0 (25-16, 25-22, 25-20) by the defending champions was powered by a tall and mighty line-up, capable of delivering powerful attacks and sturdy blocks, while playing cohesively in transition.
Wu Mengjie scored a match-high 24 points in Tuesday evening’s victory in Pool A. The Philippines’ Diana Mae Carlos tallied 15 points in the defeat.
In the opening match in Pool B, Australia and Chinese Taipei contested a close five-set match, with the latter taking the 3-2 victory (23-25, 25-22, 25-27, 25-21,15-6) after exhausting 155 minutes of play.
Chinese Taipei’s reliable hitters Kan Ko-Hui (18 points), captain Chang Li-Wen (15 points) and Chen Tzu-Ya (12 points) brought in double-digit scores. However, their substitute players made a huge impact in the decider, with the likes of Lin Shu-Ho and Wu Fang-Yu delivering in clutch plays.
Later in Pool A, Tran Thi Thanh Thuy powered Vietnam’s 3-0 victory (25-17, 25-14, 25-11) against Iran.
The Vietnamese captain and outside hitter charted 20 attacks and a service ace.
Teams complete the preliminary round until Thursday, August 25, before breaking for a rest and recovery day on Friday, August 26.
The quarterfinals are set on Saturday, August 27, to determine the semi-final match-ups on Sunday, August 28.
The finale set on Monday, August 29, will determine the champions of the 7th edition of the competition, held in Pasig City’s PhilSports Arena.
