AMMAN, Jordan — Chinese Taipei turned to Chen Ting-Yi and Chan Tzu-Yun to outlast Thailand, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, in the 2nd AVC Asian Women’s U16 Volleyball Championship on Monday at the Prince Sumaya Hall.
When they went down, 22-23 in the fourth, Chen refused to play a fifth set, as she scored two of their three straight points including the game-winning block.
Chen unleashed 24 points built on 19 kills, four blocks, and an ace and lead Chinese Taipei to a 3-0 finish in Pool D, carrying this victory over to Pool F, where they will take on Pool B’s second seed Philippines on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and Japan on the next day.
“It’s the result of everyone’s hard work,” said Chen. “I hope we can do better [next round]. I am very happy we are number one in our pool.”
Chan had 16 spikes and four aces to finish with 20 points, while Cheng Yung-Yu was also instrumental with 13 points.
Phitchayada Kunrat and Kannikar Boonrod led Thailand with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Thais enter the next round with a 0-1 record, facing Japan on Wednesday at 11 a.m. and the Philippines on the next day.
Japan trounced Iran, 25-15, 25-19, 25-13, entering the next round with a 1-0 record.
Rina Hayasaka unloaded 17 points, while Ren Sugimoto and Miko Takahashi chipped in 13 points each.
Iran is grouped with India and Australia in Pool H for the next round.
Australia ended the pool stage with a 25-17, 25-15, 25-18 victory over the winless India.
Ellie Turner made sure to end the round with a win for Australia, as she poured in 14 points, all from kills to finish Pool D with a 1-2 record.
“Everyone had a great game. Everyone played their part,” she said.
Sana Bajwa also stepped up with 11 points, sending India to a 0-3 finish before their relegation to the classification stage.
