Among the many interesting results that this weekend’s 19th leg in the women’s Daido Life SV.League in Japan produced, Queenseis Kariya and Denso Airybees Koriyama engaged it two five-set battles. In the leg’s closing match on Sunday, Kariya managed to upset their visitors from Koriyama, who surrendered the second place in the current standings to defending champions NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki.

Denso Airybees Koriyama came back from a set down twice during the first match at Queenseis Kariya and, after an epic tie-breaker, squeezed out a 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 19-17) victory. Brazilian opposite Rosamaria Montibeller led the winners with 26 points, including two aces, while her Belgian counterpart Kaja Grobelna hammered out 29, including two kill blocks. On Sunday, the tables were turned and the home team battled its way back from a set down twice in the match before shaping up a 3-2 (20-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-18, 15-10) upset. This time Grobelna led the winners with 20 points, while Rosamaria put away the match high of 24, including three blocks. With these results, Queenseis stayed well in contention for the playoff spots, in 10th place on a 15-21 win-loss ratio and 47 points. Denso dropped from second to third place on 26-10 and 80.
They were overtaken by NEC Red Rockets Kawasaki on 27-9 and 81. They picked up two home wins over Victorina Himeji. In the first game, the champions cruised to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) shutout, led by star middle blocker Haruyo Shimamura with 15 points. On Sunday, however, Himeji pushed them to a tie-breaker resolution after coming back from a set down twice. While outside hitter Arisa Inoue led Victorina with a match-high 29 points, her counterpart Yoshino Sato spearheaded NEC with 28 points towards a hard-fought 3-2 (25-13, 24-26, 25-19, 20-25, 15-9) victory. Following these results, Himeji descended one spot down the table, to sixth place on 22-14 and 64.

They were surpassed by Saga Hisamitsu Springs, who climbed to fifth on 23-13 and 70 after two three-point victories at home over winless Gunma Green Wings. American opposite Stephanie Samedy produced a match-high 22 points towards Saturday’s 3-1 (25-14, 26-24, 23-25, 25-13) win, while outside Sae Nakajima led Saga to Sunday’s 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-11) shutout with 18 points. Gunma trail in 14th place on 0-34 and 2.
Saitama Ageo Medics managed two four-set wins at home over Aranmare Yamagata and are now just a point away from mathematically securing the fourth ticket to the quarterfinals. A 20-point tally put Ageo’s outside hitter Aki Meguro on top of the scorers’ chart in Saturday’s 3-1 (25-21, 25-18, 20-25, 25-11) victory. Outside and captain Yuka Sato did one better on Sunday and led the way to a 3-1 (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-18) win with 21 points to her name. Ageo stand in fourth place on 24-12 and 72. Aranmare are second from the bottom, in 13th place on 5-31 and 16.
Seventh-placed Toray Arrows Shiga earned two three-point wins at eighth-placed Astemo Rivale Ibaraki and widened the gap between the two teams in the table. On 22-14 and 64, Toray are well on their way to booking a playoff spot soon. Astemo are still hanging on to the edge of the playoff zone on 17-19 and 48. Toray Arrows’ Italian opposite Sylvia Nwakalor put away 21 points towards Saturday’s 3-0 (26-24, 25-19, 25-19) sweep, and another 33 points towards Sunday’s 3-1 (21-25, 25-15, 25-18, 25-18) comeback.

Right below Astemo in the table, in ninth place on 16-20 and 48, are PFU BlueCats Ishikawa Kahoku. They suffered a 3-2 (27-29, 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 15-13) upset at the hands of their visitors Kurobe Aqua Fairies on Saturday with a 30-point match high from Kurobe’s German outside Lena Stigrot. On Sunday, PFU redeemed themselves with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-18) shutout, carried by outside Anna Uemura with 16 points, including five aces. Kurobe stand in 11th place on 13-23 and 36.
Table leaders Osaka Marvelous did not allow any surprises upon their visit to Okayama Seagulls and took home the full six points to improve to 30-6 and 91. Okayama stayed third from the bottom, in 12th place on 10-24 and 31. In Saturday’s 3-1 (25-16, 25-21, 20-25, 25-14) win, Belgian opposite Lise Van Hecke was Osaka’s best scorer with 20 points, while her Okayama counterpart Rinka Komatsubara fired a match-high 26. In Sunday’s 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-23) sweep, outside Mikoto Shima led the winners with 16 points, while Komatsubara once again topped the match chart, this time with 17.
Another full set of seven double headers is coming up next weekend, March 15 and 16.
