FIVB Volleyball Empowerment has been the main driver behind 14 national programmes competing at the VNL – ready to change the game and shape the future
Fourteen teams supported by FIVB Volleyball Empowerment will compete in the 2025 Volleyball Nations League. The Empowered 14 include debutants, teams in the middle of a rebuild and others returning with higher expectations – all shaped by a process that has prepared them for this stage.
Here are the Empowered 14 – the teams ready for VNL 2025, each bringing its own story into the spotlight.
Czechia’s big leap to the big league
Following their Challenger Cup triumph, Czechia enter their first VNL with the confidence of a team that has grown together. They have a system built on consistency and are now ready for the next step in their journey.
Thailand lead the line of legacy
A fixture in the VNL, Thailand have navigated generational change with poise. With Chatchu-On Moksri and Pornpun Guedpard taking on senior roles, and Empowerment reinforcing the programme’s foundation, the team continues to stand tall among Asia’s elite.
Dominican Republic aim for next-level finish
One of the most seasoned teams in the field, the Dominican Republic return with Brenda Castillo and the Martinez sisters once again at the heart of their campaign. Their long chase for a Final Round berth resumes, this time with greater depth and experience.
Canada embark on new mission with Empowerment and experience
A new era begins for Canada under Giovanni Guidetti. With Empowerment strengthening the programme’s rise, and talents like Kiera Van Ryk and Brie King maturing into leadership, the team looks to turn promise into lasting presence in the world’s top tier.
Germany set out to regroup and rise again
A reset under head coach Giulio Bregoli has brought renewed focus to Germany. Empowerment support has helped the transition, as Camilla Weitzel and Lina Alsmeier step into bigger roles and the team builds towards a more stable future.
Bulgaria build new identity with vision shaped by past
The latest campaign of Bulgaria is marked by the return of a national legend, this time to lead from the bench. With Antonina Zetova now coaching, and a mix of youth and experience in the line-up, the team enter VNL 2025 aiming to restore consistency and identity.
Netherlands’ new generation steps forward
The emphasis of the Netherlands has been on breadth and development. An extended squad selected by Felix Koslowski reflects the federation’s long-term vision, supported by Empowerment and geared toward building a deeper, more resilient unit.
France women look to rise under a winning legacy
For France, the path forward builds on a breakthrough Challenger Cup win two years ago, along with a proven model for success in their men’s team. With more court time and Empowerment-supported structures in place, the women’s side seek to make their mark in just their second season at VNL level.
The women’s field features a mix of new and familiar contenders looking to show their progress. The competition begins on 4 June across Ottawa, Rio de Janeiro and Beijing.
On the men’s side are squads arriving with clearer direction and stronger foundations, shaped by different phases of development through Empowerment support. Their VNL campaign gets underway on 11 June in Quebec City, Rio de Janeiro and Xi’an.
Slovenia keep edge with Empowerment support
Continuity remains key for Slovenia. With Tine Urnaut and Rok Mozic again leading the squad and a refined system under Fabio Soli, the team continue their pursuit of a podium finish – a goal that has felt within reach in recent campaigns.
Germany build momentum for the climb
A youthful line-up and strategic rebuilding mark this year’s VNL stint for Germany. While the team is still seeking a first Final Round appearance, support from Empowerment has bolstered its foundation, and the current cycle offers a clearer path forward.

The Netherlands men’s programme has turned the page, embracing a generational shift and a new coaching set-up. As they begin this Olympic cycle, Empowerment remains central to a plan that focuses on long-term structure and renewal.
Ukraine debut with a team forged for the future
Making their first appearance in the VNL, Ukraine arrive with momentum built through strong continental performances. Head coach Raul Lozano leads a team that brings physicality, tactical control and a sense of readiness shaped by Empowerment support.
Cuba look to power through the pack
