New commission set to preserve volleyball’s history and shape its future
The FIVB Heritage and Legacy Commission held its first-ever meeting on Wednesday, February 26, following its creation at the end of 2024. This new Commission was established to reflect the evolving needs of the Global Volleyball Movement, ensuring that the sport’s rich history and traditions continue to shape an exciting future for the sport.
All FIVB Commission meetings, including this gathering, have been conducted online this month. This format aligns with the FIVB’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact while providing greater flexibility for participants. The environmental benefits of this are substantial: the total carbon footprint of online versus on-site FIVB Commission meetings is 69 tons of CO2 equivalent lower, this largely due to the lack of air travel. This is equivalent to the emissions produced by running three to four cars continuously for an entire year or the annual carbon absorption of 3,100 trees*.
In his opening address, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo emphasised the importance of the Heritage and Legacy Commission’s work within the framework of the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032 and its guiding motto: “Together as One.” He highlighted the pillar “Athletes, History and Heritage” as central to the Commission’s mission.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the scope of the new Commission and the positive impact it can have on the Global Volleyball Movement. Key topics also included the exploration of initiatives to celebrate and promote volleyball globally, the development of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame to enhance the recognition of volleyball’s athletes and their contributions, the Players’ Post Career Programme and the FIVB Volleyball Foundation.
Commission President Joop Alberda reflected on the significance of the newly formed body, stating:
“It is a real honour to lead this new Commission, where there is a real opportunity to truly make an impact. We live in an extremely fast moving digital age, and whilst this brings excitement and opportunity we must also remember this; that by learning from the past, we can inform the future and ensure that the FIVB continues to develop and strengthen the Global Volleyball Movement.”
The FIVB Commission meetings will continue on 26 February with the Volleyball Leagues and Clubs Council.
