President Surangel Whipps Jr. endorses Palau as host for future edition of the FIVB Age Group Beach Volleyball World Championship
On day two of the FIVB delegation’s visit to the Pacific Mini Games, the FIVB team met with the President of the Republic of Palau, Surangel Whipps Jr., to discuss future hosting opportunities and the development of volleyball in the country.
As the meeting coincided with the first ever World Volleyball Day (7 June), FIVB President Fabio Azevedo presented President Surangel Whipps Jr. with a World Volleyball Day t-shirt to commemorate the day. He also gifted the President of Palau a special print of a painting by renowned artist Peter Spens, depicting the beach volleyball venue of the Olympic Games Paris 2024.
One of the key focal points of the discussion was the support provided by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment programme. Since 2017, 168,000 USD has been invested across 11 projects, ranging from volleyball equipment support to coach support.
In addition, the long-term vision to establish a Centre of Excellence for beach volleyball in Palau was explored. The President of Palau expressed strong support for this transformative project, which would serve not only the athletes of Palau but also benefit surrounding Oceania nations by providing a regional training and development hub.
In a significant show of commitment, President Whipps gave his full endorsement for Palau to host a FIVB Age Group Beach Volleyball World Championship in the future. The FIVB will now begin feasibility studies and planning efforts to explore bringing the competition to the country.
