FIVB MEDICAL COMMISSION MEETS TO DISCUSS SUPPORT OF GLOBAL VOLLEYBALL MOVEMENT IN 2025

Key topics included anti-doping, mental wellbeing and athlete safety ahead of a milestone year for volleyball

The FIVB Medical Commission met on Wednesday, February 12, bringing together top medical experts to discuss key athlete health, safety and anti-doping initiatives for the year ahead.

FIVB President Fabio Azevedo opened the session by outlining the Commission’s key focus areas in alignment with the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032: Knowledge Transfer and Sustainability, FIVB Good Governance – State of the Art, and International Relations and the Olympic Movement. These pillars will help shape the Federation’s ongoing efforts to uphold the highest standards of athlete care and integrity in volleyball.

A key topic of discussion was the FIVB 2024 Anti-Doping Programme. The Commission discussed the success of the FIVB’s partnership with the International Testing Agency (ITA) and reaffirmed its commitment to clean sport, highlighting the extensive samples collected at international competition and the increasing number of out-of-competition tests. Other agenda points included the responsibilities of Medical Delegates at international events and the setup of the Athletes’ Mental Health Working Group – a group designed to provide focused support for players both on and off the court.

Commission President Annie Peytavin reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to ensuring a fair and supportive environment for all:

“Athlete wellbeing goes beyond physical health – it encompasses mental welfare, safety and a sense of support throughout their sporting careers. Following a busy 2024 which saw a record breaking VNL and a memorable Olympic Games Paris 2024, our priority remains clear: to create the safest possible environment for our players while upholding the integrity of our sport. Clean and fair competition is at the heart of what we do at the FIVB, and I have no doubt that we can continue to enforce this in the years ahead.”

The FIVB Commission meetings will continue with the Legal Commission convening on 13 February.
