Manila, Philippines, March 23, 2025 – The FIVB-PNVF Referees’ Refresher Course came to a successful conclusion on Sunday after intensive five days of theoretical and practical training at Ninoy Aquino Stadium that began on March 19.
Mr Guillermo Paredes from Argentina, President of FIVB Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission, was the Course Director and Primary Resource Speaker of the course, which was organised by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF), while Mr Yul Castillo Benosa, Chairman of the PNVF Referee & Rules of the Game, was the Course Instructor.
The course had attracted a diverse group of volleyball referees from across Philippines, eight of them international referees, all looking to advance their expertise in the refereeing and understand the Rules of the Game, Modern Volleyball Use of Technology, FIVB Video Challenge Regulations, FOP/Court Inspection and Set-Up, FIVB Match Protocols and Practical Refereeing Applications with demonstration teams (seven matches) and Match Referees’ Evaluation.
As Philippines is hosting the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in two venues – Smart Araneta Coliseum and SM Mall of Asia Arena – from September 12 to 28, the course will help ensure proper officiating in the topflight 32-nation competition hosted by the country.
The intensive five-day refresher course concluded successfully on Sunday, with AVC and PNVF President Mr Ramon Suzara presiding over the closing ceremony and presenting certificates to the participants.
“We want to assure that proper officiating will be imposed during the matches with 32 of the world’s best teams competing in two venues during the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship. This is the World Championship and that’s why we have to make it the best,” said AVC and PNVF President Mr Suzara in his closing speech.
“We would like to express our gratitude to the FIVB for having Mr Guillermo Paredes as our Course Director and Primary Resource Speaker in the course. He has provided our referees advanced knowledge on how to officiate the matches properly.”
Also in attendance in the Sunday’s closing and certificate presentation were PNVF Secretary General Mr Donaldo Caringal, PNVF Chairman Mr Arnel Hajan, Mr Guillermo Paredes, President of the FIVB Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission, and PNVF Board Member and Chairman of the PNVF Referee & Rules of the Game Mr Yul Castillo Benosa.
These newly-certified referees are now equipped with latest global officiating standards and high-level technology, ready to elevate their officiating performance in continental major competitions and the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship, with Philippines playing host this coming September, in particular.
