FIVB RULES OF THE GAME AND REFEREEING COMMISSION REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO INTEGRITY AND FAIR PLAY

The Commission met for the first time under the new FIVB leadership

The FIVB Rules of the Game and Refereeing Commission met on Friday to discuss its strategic course for the 2025-2028 period.

Following a landmark year for the sport, with both a record-breaking Volleyball Nations League (VNL) 2024 season and an unforgettable Olympic Games Paris 2024, the Commission reinforced its commitment to upholding the integrity and fairness of volleyball.

FIVB President Fabio Azevedo opened the meeting, highlighting the Commission’s important role in delivering on the commitments outlined in the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032. With a focus on Technology and Integrity of the Game; Knowledge Transfer and Sustainability; and Social Responsibility and Mass Participation – Volleyball Foundation, the Commission will continue to ensure that athletes, fans and all stakeholders can have every confidence in the decision-making of the game.

Highlights of the discussions include a reflection on the successful VNL 2024, a look back at the empowering work of the Commission in 2024 which included the facilitation of referee courses across the Global Volleyball Movement.

Additionally, the Commission looked ahead to what is set to be another record-breaking VNL in 2025 and spoke at length on developing officiating processes, strengthening education and training, and expanding the use of data-driven technology to enhance decision-making accuracy.

The Commission President Guillermo Paredes emphasised the crucial role of referees in maintaining volleyball’s integrity:

“A referee’s role is so important in preserving the very essence of fairness and trust in our sport. It is important that as a Commission, we continue to equip our referees and officials with the correct skills and opportunities, to allow for a continued sense of trust, fairness and integrity that is key to the development of volleyball all over the world.”

The FIVB’s series of Commission meetings continues next week with the FIVB Coaches Commission, set to convene on 10 February.
