FIVB UNITES GENERATIONS WITH INNOVATIVE ATHLETE-CENTRED WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AWARD CEREMONIES

Volleyball legends honour today’s stars, celebrating both heritage and the future of the sport

The FIVB has reimagined one of sport’s most iconic moments – the award ceremony – by bringing together volleyball’s legends and its current champions in a powerful celebration of heritage, unity and the Global Volleyball Movement.

In a historic moment for the Olympic Movement, athletes themselves took centre stage to present medals and trophies at the FIVB Volleyball World Championships. This bold new concept honours volleyball’s legacy while celebrating its bright future.

Volleyball icons including Jordan Larson (USA), Kim Yeon Koung (KOR), Nootsara Tomkom (THA) and Mireya Luis (CUB) awarded teams at the women’s competition in Thailand. One of the most moving moments came when Mireya Luis, a three-time Olympic and two-time World Champion, presented the trophy to the new women’s champions, Italy, creating a living bridge between legends of volleyball.

More icons of the sport will crown the podium finishers at the men’s competition in the Philippines, with medal matches set to take place on Sunday 28 September.

This initiative has been embraced by athletes and fans alike, praised for its authenticity, sense of community and ability to unite generations.

The approach is a direct expression of Focal Point 5 of the FIVB’s Strategic Vision 2032, Athletes, History and Heritage, which emphasises giving athletes a greater voice and ensuring the sport’s legacy remains visible and celebrated.

“Volleyball is more than a sport, it is a global community built across generations,” said President of the FIVB Athletes’ Commission Louise Bawden. “When we celebrate legends of volleyball together with today’s champions on the world stage, we showcase the collaboration, integration, peace and solidarity that define our sport. Through activities like this, we inspire both the past and the next generation of athletes, and strengthen volleyball as one united movement”.

This innovative athlete-centred format will continue at future FIVB events, strengthening the bond between volleyball’s past, present and future and empowering fans, athletes and friends of volleyball worldwide.
