History is made as Southeast Asia hosts the competition for first time ever
The FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship officially began in Bangkok today with a colourful opening ceremony at Huamark Indoor Stadium, marking a historic milestone as Thailand hosts the tournament for the first time.
The 20th edition of the Women’s World Championship represents another historic first, as Southeast Asia welcomes a Volleyball World Championship for the first time in the sport’s history. An FIVB delegation, including President Fabio Azevedo, was present for the opening ceremony alongside Thailand officials including Sorawong Thienthong, Minister of Tourism and Sports, and Dr Kongsak Yodmanee, Governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand.

The competition runs from 22 August to 7 September across four host cities: Bangkok, Nakhon Ratchasima, Chiang Mai and Phuket, with each venue adding its own character to the event.
Alongside the opening ceremony, the Volleyball Experience was launched at the Sports Authority of Thailand complex beside the Huamark Indoor Stadium. The interactive fan zone will remain open throughout the competition, offering activities for all ages and bringing supporters closer to the sport.
The Volleyball Experience provides an opportunity for fans, whether they are ticket holders for the competition or not, to test out their volleyball and sitting volleyball skills with interactive equipment, take part in matches on mini courts and experience the vibrant culture of Thailand.
