Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, June 7, 2022 – Uzbekistan suffered two straight losses at the pool round-robin preliminaries including the 9-25, 15-25, 12-25 letdown at the hands of Korea on Day 2 of the 14th Asian Women’s U18 Volleyball Championship at the Nakhon Pathom Sports Center Gymnasium on Tuesday.
Going down in straight sets to Thailand in their opening Pool A clash the previous day, Uzbekistan needed a win in this crucial match against Korea to keep their hopes of advancing to the next round alive. As only top two teams from each pool will make the cut for the next round, more wins in the pool plays are badly required for all participating teams and this makes things clear only potential teams which can maintain their winning streak will have better chances of advancing. However, things did not go the Uzbekistan’s way on Tuesday.
Hoping to make amends for their first loss on Monday, Uzbekistan entered the court with the winning attitude in the first set. Still, they found the Koreans too strong as they went down in a totally lopsided battle 9-25. Despite the Uzbekistan’s improvement shown in the second set, Korea, whose height average is 177cm against smaller-built rivals’ 172 cm, fared better to capture the set 25-15 to stretch the lead to 2-0. Korea continued their fine form in the third set, attacking aggressively and blocking solidly to win the easy set 25-12 and match.
Enuji Shin led Korea with 17 points including 8 kills. Sabeen Kim contributed 13 points through her deadly attacks, while Dilnoza Boymirzaeva topscored with 6 points for Uzbekistan.
Korea on Wednesday will challenge Australia, while Uzbekistan will next go up against the Australians on Thursday after a day’s rest.
