Semey, Kazakhstan, April 23, 2022 – Team head coaches and captains from six participating teams attended the press conference at Nomad Hotel here on Saturday, vowing to give their best to strive for success in the 2022 Asian Women’s Club Volleyball Championship.
The continent’s top-flight women’s club competition which serves as the qualification tournament for the 2022 FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship will kick off on Sunday at the Abay Arena Cultural and Sports Complex in Semey.
Defending champions Altay VC, the 2021-22 Kazakhstan Women’s National League winners, and Kuanysh VC, third place at the afore-mentioned tournament, reigning and consecutive two-time Thailand League champions Diamond Food – Fine Chef Sport Club, the 2020-21 Iran Women’s Super League champions Barij Essence, Uzbekistan’s Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute and Kyrgyzstan VC will strut their stuff in the single round-robin preliminaries.

At the end of the preliminaries, only top two teams will set up the final showdown, vying for top honour and the lone berth on offer for the World Club Championship, while teams finishing third and fourth places will renew their rivalry in the third-place playoff match to fight for the bronze medal.

During the press conference on Saturday, Kyrgyzstan VC head coach Mr Abdukhamid Aisakhodzhiev admitted that most of his players are very young and have just finished contesting the Kyrgyzstan National Youth League. Despite the fact that the team players are making their debut in the Asian Women’s Club Championship, they are very determined to go all-out with aims of competing against the Asia’s leading club teams and gaining international experience.

Mr Kittikun Sri-Uttawong, head coach of Diamond Food – Fine Chef Sport Club from Thailand, said that his team has sights firmly set on winning one match at a time, but hoped his players will do their best to secure a final berth.
The Thai team has been considered as one of the strongest teams to be reckoned with in the one-week tournament. Spearheaded by renowned world-class setter Nootsara Tomkom, who was named the Best Setter of the 2021 Asian Women’s Club Championship in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, Diamond Food – Fine Chef Sport Club will be strengthened by two overseas players – the 196cm-tall Brazilian wing spiker Fernada Davis Tome and middle blocker Liannes Castaneda from Cuba.

As Altay VC head coach Serbian Mr Marko Grsic was convinced that his team will come up with their possible best performance to defend their title at home, Kuanysh VC head coach Serbian Mr Darko Dobreskov was also upbeat that his team will make their mark in the championship.

Altay VC, sixth at the last year’s FIVB Volleyball Women’s Club World Championship in Ankara, Turkey and perennial Kazakhstan’s Super Cup winners, relied on the same roster as the previous edition which earned them the first Asian Women’s Club title and the Kazakhstan’s third in history.
Powered by two overseas players, Serbian Danica Radenkovic and Ukrainian Nadiia Kodola, who landed the Best Outside Spiker at the previous edition in Thailand, Altay VC will also field a strong lineup including captain Sana Anarkulova, named the MVP in Thailand in 2021, and Kristina Belova, who won the Best Opposite Spiker at the previous edition.
Kuanysh VC, last year’s bronze medallists at the Kazakhstan National League Masters and at the 29th Kazakhstan Volleyball Championship, will field three overseas players in the tournament. They comprise Russian Elena Samoilova, Ukrainian Karyna Denysova and Serbian Aleksandra Cirovic.

Barij Essence team head coach Ms Fatemeh Shabankhamseh and Mr Kholmuminov Bakhriddin, head coach of Jizzakh State Pedagogical Institute from Uzbekistan, also set sights on their teams to try their best to avoid getting early exit from the tournament.

Aside from the press conference, the Referee Seminar & Clinic and VIS Clinic were also held on Saturday to make sure all referees officiating at the 2022 Asian Women’s Club Championship will do the right things according to procedures and protocols and will be made to the best of their abilities in this top-flight competition, with the reporting system and scoring matter being put in the right place.
