Newly established council unites global volleyball leagues and clubs, driving sustainability and strategic growth
For the first time ever, the FIVB Volleyball Leagues and Clubs Council convened today, marking an important milestone in uniting and integrating volleyball leagues and clubs across the Global Volleyball Movement.
The council was established at the end of 2024 following the election of Fabio Azevedo as President of the FIVB, reinforcing the federation’s commitment to a strategic and sustainable future for the sport.
All FIVB Commission meetings, including this gathering, have been conducted online this month. This format aligns with the FIVB’s commitment to reducing environmental impact while providing greater flexibility for participants. The environmental benefits of this are substantial: the total carbon footprint of online versus onsite FIVB Commission meetings is 69 tonnes of CO2e lower, this largely due to the lack of air travel. This is equivalent to the emissions produced by running three to four cars continuously for an entire year or the annual carbon absorption of 3,100 trees*.
In his opening address, FIVB President Fabio Azevedo highlighted the crucial role of the new Council in fulfilling the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032. He outlined key pillars shaping the sport’s future that the Council should focus on, including: FIVB World Calendar 2029-2032; Technology and Integrity of the Game; FIVB Good Governance – State of the Art; Social Responsibility and Mass Participation – Volleyball Foundation.
Discussions during the meeting covered a range of vital topics, including the onboarding and responsibilities of council members, updates from Volleyball World, the Volleyball Calendar 2029-2032, FIVB Licensed Agents, player agreements and proposals from other commissions.
During the meeting, President Azevedo reinforced the profound impact volleyball can have in uniting people and encouraging shared experiences across the globe.
“Volleyball is more than just a sport – it is a force for good. We must remember this as we navigate a world that needs collaboration and unity. Our Strategic Vision 2032 motto, ‘Together as One’, embodies this spirit, and this Council plays a crucial role in bringing our global community closer together. By working as one, we can empower our athletes, leagues, clubs and fans worldwide, ensuring that volleyball continues to inspire and connect people.”
The FIVB Commission meetings will continue on 27 February with the VNL Council.
