INDONESIA EDGE OUT THAILAND IN THRILLING DECIDER TO REIGN SUPREME IN WEEK 2 OF 5TH SEA V LEAGUE

Jakarta, Indonesia, July 20, 2025 – Indonesia capped off a sensational campaign in Men’s Week 2 of the 5th SEA V League with a dramatic 3-2 comeback victory over reigning champions Thailand, delighting nearly 5,000 passionate fans at the Jakarta International Velodrome on Sunday.

In a clash worthy of a final, the hosts held their nerve to outlast Thailand in a five-set thriller, 27-29, 25-15, 25-23, 22-25, 15-13, avenging the last week’s 3-1 loss in Candon City, Philippines, and sealing the Week 2 crown in style.

The victory not only crowned Indonesia as Week 2 champions but also marked a sweet taste of revenge and a continuation of their rich vein of form in front of a raucous home crowd. With both Indonesia and Thailand finishing with three wins apiece over the two-week campaign, the spoils were split: Thailand ruled Week 1, Indonesia reigned in Week 2.

At the conclusion of the single round-robin tournament in Jakarta, hosts Indonesia stood tall with a perfect 4-0 record, amassing 10 points. Vietnam followed in second place with three wins and 8 points, while Thailand, suffering two defeats, settled for third with 7 points. Philippines managed one win for 5 points, and Cambodia, winless in four outings, finished fifth without a point.

When combining results from the two-week showdown, Indonesia emerged as the overall leaders with 18 points from seven wins and one loss. Thailand placed second with 16 points (5-3), followed by Vietnam (15 points, 5-3), Philippines (10 points, 3-5), and Cambodia (1 point, 0-8). As a result, Indonesia and Thailand punched their tickets to the prestigious 2026 AVC Men’s Nations Cup as the top two finishers.

Indonesia’s Week 2 campaign was nothing short of dominant. They opened with a hard-fought 3-2 win over the Philippines on July 16, then overcame Vietnam 3-1 the following day. After a rest day, they breezed past Cambodia in straight sets before saving their best for last in the gripping finale against Thailand.

In the high-stakes showdown, veteran star Rivan Nurmulki and scoring powerhouse Boy Arnez Arabi led the charge. Despite narrowly dropping the opening set 27-29, Indonesia roared back with commanding wins in the next two sets.

Thailand, spearheaded by the explosive Amornthep Konharn, refused to go down quietly, leveling the match with a gritty fourth-set win. The decider was a nail-biting affair, but with the crowd behind them and momentum in hand, Indonesia surged ahead 8-4, maintained a slender lead, and eventually closed out the set 15-13 after a crucial service error from Amornthep sealed Thailand’s fate.

While Thailand edged the attack count (65 to 62), Indonesia ruled at the net with 13 blocks to Thailand’s 10. Both sides delivered five aces, but the hosts capitalized on more Thai errors (34 to 25).

Boy Arnez Arabi was the star of the night, firing a match-high 30 points from 25 kills, 4 blocks, and an ace. Rivan Nurmulki added 25 points from 22 attacks. Thailand’s Amornthep Konharn tallied 27 points (24 attacks, 1 block, 2 aces) in the losing effort.

Earlier in the day, Vietnam showcased class and composure, securing a 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 25-16) win over the Philippines.

Nguyen Ngoc Thuan topped the scoresheet with 24 points (19 attacks, 3 blocks, 2 aces), while Jade Alex Disquitado led the Philippines with 17 points. Michaelo Buddin and Leo Ordiales chipped in 13 points apiece.

The awards presentation was a fitting finale to a pulsating week of volleyball. Boy Arnez Arabi stood out, earning both the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and Best Outside Hitter awards.

Champions Indonesia received US$13,000, the coveted trophy, and gold medals.

Runners-up Vietnam claimed US$12,000, with Thailand taking home US$11,000. Philippines and Cambodia received US$10,000 and US$9,000 respectively.

With the Jakarta leg wrapped up in spectacular fashion, the SEA V League once again underscored the region’s growing volleyball prowess. For Indonesia, the victory was more than a title, it was a statement of intent ahead of the 2025 SEA Games, and a celebration of national pride on home soil.
