INDONESIA FINISH 7th PLACE WITH 3-0 WIN OVER HONG KONG, CHINA

Manila, Philippines, May 29, 2024 – Indonesia closed their campaign in the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women on a winning note, besting Hong Kong, China in straight sets, 3-0 (25-15, 25-19, 25-20) on Wednesday morning at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Junaida Santi led all scorers on board, delivering 21 points from 19 attacks, one block and one service ace. She proved to be a young gem for the Indonesian squad, who could look forward to more opportunities to serve flag and country.

Indonesia loaded their offense with Santi, who could operate from the flank and the backline. Captain Bela Sabrina Agustina, who scored 12 points in the victory,  also supported from the wings.

Hong Kong, China relied on the experience of hitter Chim Wing Lam. She proved to be a trooper for the team, hustling hard at the backcourt, but also delivering on attack. The EAVA side was sorely missing the services of Shum Lam, who also keyed in impressive performances in previous matches in Manila, as she played sparingly on Wednesday morning. Mostly, the team gave away a huge deal of points from unforced errors on both attack and serve.

Meanwhile, Indonesia showed a lot of composure in their court. For sure, they were not playing without errors or miscues, but they handled their transitions soundly even when their opponents were playing much tougher.  The Indonesian side built upon their momentum to mount a straight-set win.

With Wednesday’s victory, Indonesia have avenged their straight-set defeat to Hong Kong, China on May 23, during the Preliminary Round.

“We are just very happy to get the win today. For many of us in the team, it is our first time to play in the AVC so we have learned a lot from this experience. As for today’s win, we are proud that we can take home some good news with us,” said captain Agustina during an interview after the match.

The Indonesians have been unable to replicate their feat as runners-up in Surabaya 2023 podium. Meanwhile, Hong Kong, China have improved from their previous ranking at 9th place to return with the 8th position this time.
