Empowerment support boosts Indonesia’s efforts in event delivery and talent growth
Indonesia will host the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s U21 World Championship from 7 to 17 August in Surabaya, with preparations supported by the FIVB Volleyball Empowerment programme through coaching and event equipment support.
The Empowerment coaching support includes a six-month period from December 2024 to June 2025, followed by an additional three-month term through September. Marcos Sugiyama is serving as head coach of the national U21 women’s team, leading preparations during this key development phase.
The FIVB provided Gerflor Taraflex flooring to assist with event delivery, contributing to improved hosting conditions and strengthening Indonesia’s capacity to stage international-level competitions.
The women’s team made its only senior World Championship appearance in 1982, but Indonesia has remained active in regional volleyball, earning medals at the Southeast Asian Games and making 20 appearances at the Asian Championship. This year, the country hosts the Women’s U21 World Championship for the first time, with volleyball-loving Surabaya set to welcome the event.
The 24 participating teams will be divided into four single round-robin pools of six. The top four teams in each pool will advance to the eighthfinals. Winners of the eighthfinals will move on to the quarterfinals, then to the semifinals and finals to determine places first to eighth.
Eighthfinal losing sides will compete in a separate bracket to determine positions ninth to 16th through three more rounds. The bottom two teams in each pool will enter playoffs for places 17th to 24th, also decided over three rounds. All teams will play through to the end of the tournament to determine final standings from first to 24th.
Hosting the Women’s U21 World Championship gives the Indonesian Volleyball Federation a platform to strengthen its development system and highlight the country’s long-standing passion for the sport. Empowerment support has played a vital role in guiding the U21 team’s preparations and shaping the structure behind the national programme.
Surabaya, known for its enthusiastic volleyball community and history of staging top regional events, will welcome the world’s best U21 women’s squads. As Indonesia’s second-largest city, it combines tradition and modern facilities, offering a vibrant setting for international competition.
The event comes at a time of renewed energy around the sport in Indonesia. With the backing of Empowerment, the Women’s U21 World Championship supports national efforts to improve performance, invest in talent and strengthen the country’s role in international volleyball.
