The Asian team turns the course of the game against Tunisia around
Iran’s Morteza fire five aces against Tunisia at the Men’s Volleyball World Championship
Iran celebrated their first win at the 2025 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship in the Philippines. After Sunday’s shocking defeat at the hands of Egypt, on Tuesday the Iranians met another North African opponent – Tunisia – in a Pool A match in Pasay City and produced a four-set victory. In the current pool standings, Tunisia and Iran occupy second and third place, respectively, on a 1-1 win-loss record and 3 points each. The African team edges ahead on set ratios.

Iran found their way back from a set down against Tunisia and powered through the next three to earn a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-16) victory.

Iran’s outside hitter and captain Morteza Sharifi delivered five of the team’s 10 aces in the match. In comparison, Tunisia scored only two. The Asian side also outdid their opponents in attack by 55-46 in spike kills. Morteza also showed high quality in offense, swinging at a 56% success rate, and on the block, with three stuffs to his name, to pile up a total of 18 points. Another three aces came from the serves of his cross-court teammate, 21-year-old Poriya Khanzadeh. He was the best scorer of the match with 21 points. Opposite Ali Hajipour also put up three kill blocks, one of them for the match winner in set four. He finished with 14 points, while middle blocker Mohammad Valizadeh chipped in with another 12.
“First, I would like to thank all the guys who helped me to show a good level. Second, I want to thank the Iranian fans, who support us and gave us a good feeling to have more power on the court,” Morteza told VBTV.
Tunisia managed to match Iran in blocking with nine stuffs and did slightly better in making unforced errors – 24 against 27. 22-year-old outside Oussama Ben Romdhane and opposite Ali Bongui led the team with 14 points, including one kill block, each. Middle blocker Ahmed Kadhi also reached the double digits with 10 points to his name, including two blocks.
The second match of the second leg in Pool A on Tuesday – between the home team of the Philippines and Egypt – will serve off at 17:30 local time (09:30 UTC).
