Iran took a 3-1 (25-15, 25-19, 17-25, 25-23) victory over Cuba on Saturday to advance to Sunday’s ninth-place match at the FIVB Volleyball U21 Men’s World Championship in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Amin Khajeh Khalili topscored with 17 points including 12 attacks for Iran, while Alexei Ramirez Masso also scored similar 17 points for Cuba.
Amir Toukhteh, middle blocker and captain of Iran, said after the match: “It was a difficult match for us and very important for the team and for the mentality of each Iranian player. We came here well prepared and wanted to show high-quality volleyball for the win. Now we are happy about the result. I am very thankful to our physiotherapist who quickly helped me after the injury in the third set and brought me back to the court.”
Alejandro Gonzalez, middle blocker of Cuba, said: “We started badly in the first set, making stupid mistakes and showing a messy game. This also affected us in the second part. In the third and the fourth sets, we tried to come back into the match, but the fatigue and the injuries did not allow us to do it. Our game did not turn out the way we wanted.”
