Defending champions Iran faced no issues in shutting out Morocco 3-0 (25-5, 25-21, 25-15) in their last preliminary match to finish third in Pool A in the FIVB Volleyball Men’s U21 World Championship in Carbonia, Italy on Saturday.
Toukhteh Amir Hossein, who was part of Iran’s title defence success at the recent 21st Asian Senior Men’s Championship in Japan, chipped in with 13 points including 5 attacks and 8 aces for Iran, while Mohamed Yakki led Morocco with 6 points.
Asil Amir HosseinTaghavi, setter of Iran: “Our last match from yesterday against Argentina was a difficult one for us. Before, we had also lost to Belgium… Maybe if we had started against Morocco, we would have won our group matches, who knows? We look ahead, and we will fight for the best position possible.”
Ben Allal Mohamed, setter of Morocco: “Since the beginning of the tournament, we had this problem with injuries and players who are not with us. It definitely impacts the level of our game. This was our destiny at the world championship, and we cannot change it. We faced many challenges today as well, but this is sports – sometimes you win, sometimes you lose.”
Iran finished third in Pool C with 5 points from one win against two losses to be relegated to 9th-16th classification round in Pool G, where Iran and Morocco will take on Thailand and Egypt, the teams finishing 3rd and 4th places in Pool A, between September 27 and 29, 2021.
