IRAN TO FIGHT IT OUT WITH NEPAL, WITH INDIA CHALLENGING SRI LANKA IN MUCH-ANTICIPATED SEMIFINALS OF CAVA WOMEN’S NATIONS LEAGUE

Kathmandu, Nepal, August 5, 2024 – India showed their dominant performance in their last preliminary match as they cruised to sensational 25-13, 25-21, 25-20 victory against Sri Lanka in the CAVA Women’s Volleyball Nations League here on Monday.

The other match on Monday saw hosts Nepal demolish the Maldives, which have yet won a single match in the tournament, in comfortable straight sets 25-8, 25-19, 25-18.

As the single round-robin preliminaries of the one-week tournament came to a close on Monday, India finished on top of the five-team standing with 10 points from three wins against a single loss to Nepal.

 

The host side came in second place with 9 points from the similar performance of three wins against one loss.

Iran had 7 points from three wins against one loss to come in third position, while Sri Lanka finished fourth with 4 points from one win against three losses and the Maldives lost all four matches to finish on the bottom fifth place with no point earned.

The do-or-die semifinals are set to take place on Tuesday, with a repeat of the pool preliminaries. Fourth place Sri Lanka will take on top-ranked team India at 3:00pm local time. Third place Iran will go up against second place and hosts Nepal at 5:15pm. Winless the Maldives have already crashed out of the competition. 

Nepal, which succumbed to hard-fought 2-3 loss to Iran in the preliminary encounter, are now in quest for a revenge match against the same rivals in the Tuesday’s semifinals, while India will have to come up with good show to prove again that that they are a cut above Sri Lanka. The Indians had already beaten the opponents in straight sets in the round-robin preliminaries. 

The two winning teams in the Tuesday’s semifinal encounters will advance to the final showdown on Wednesday, August 7, with the two losers battling it out in the third-place playoff for bronze medal.

Following the conclusion of the pool preliminaries on Monday, the Nepal Volleyball Association invited all officials and participating teams to a Gala Dinner Ceremony, providing an opportunity for teams to enjoy and familiarize themselves with local dances.
