JAPAN LOSE STRAIGHT SETS TO WORLD CHAMPIONS POLAND

Reigning two-time world champions Poland advanced to 9-2 and remain in pursuit of the table leaders at the 2021 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy with yet another solid win, 3-0 over Japan on Wednesday.

Japan, playing without many key players including Yuki Ishikawa and Ran Takahashi, proved no match against the stronger Poland’s great serves to go down in comfortable straight sets 14-25, 18-25, 19-25.

Tomasz Fornal topscored with 16 points for Poland, while Maciej Muzaj added 14. Kenta Takanashi led Japan with 10 points and Tatsunori Otsuka grabbed 7.

Kenta Takanashi of Japan said at the virtual Mixed Zone: “The way Poland served – so well and strong – is what we should aim to. So we struggled in reception. We were not able to perform well in reception and it’s one of the reasons why we lost today. Poland are always very active in all plays, they presented fantastic skills and we didn’t follow them.”

Poland’s Tomasz Fornal said: “We still try to find the team for the Olympics, so we play every game with a different lineup. But the most important thing for us is to play well, and no matter how we play we win.

“Not every team wants to play with us with their strongest starting six, but we have to stay focused on our game and play as well as we can. Japan defend a lot, they play technical volleyball, but we also have many technical players in our squad, so we were prepared for this.”
