Formidable Japan pulled off a convincing straight-set win over Germany to extend their record to 6-4 and keep their hopes of advancing to the Final Four in the 2021 FIVB Men’s Volleyball Nations League in Rimini, Italy alive.
With Yuki Ishikawa unleashing thundering attacks and powerful jump serves, Japan on Tuesday cruised to a 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-20) victory over Germany to improve their win-loss record to 6-4 with 16 points to stay at the 7th position of the 16-team standing.
Talented Yuki Ishikawa scored a match-high 20 points including 17 attacks ad 3 aces for Japan, while left-handed attacker Kunihiro Shimizu added 11 points and Ran Takahashi 10. Linus Weber grabbed 15 points on Germany’s losing efforts.
Germany’s Linus Weber said at the virtual Mixed Zone: “I think that especially in the first set we played on a good level, but Japan played very well in defence and they are very well-known for their defence and their technical skills. Our sideout didn’t work well.”
Japan’s Yuki Ishikawa said: “We played really well in sideout – we were focused on this element all the time. Also in case of transitions we were able to make many points. And these two aspects were really important to win this game. The VNL is a very tough tournament, but this victory will give the team more energy for the upcoming last games.”
