JAPAN SERVE STRAIGHT-SETS MATCH ON AUSTRALIA

Pasig City, Philippines, August 25, 2022 – Japan jumped to the top of Pool B of the preliminary round of the 2022 AVC Cup for Women after dealing a straight-sets match 3-0 (25-4, 25-11, 25-15) on Australia on Thursday afternoon at the PhilSports Arena.

The Japanese side performed nearly flawlessly from the service line, and completed the match with a total of 12 aces. Yuki Nishikawa (18 points), Mizuki Tanaka (16 points) and Miyu Nakagawa (11 points) led the charge with double-digit contributions for Japan’s third consecutive win in the competition.

“I just feel great to win this match today,’” said Nishikawa, who added that they are keeping their eyes on the prize.

“Ultimately, we want to win this competition,” she said.

Japan outside hitter Tanaka kept it together from the service line to set the tone at the start of the match. Their opponents could not seem to position themselves well on serve-receive. When they succeeded in passing the ball, they would fall prone to errors.

The Australian side needed to find solutions to their predicament, as they could barely side-out. They tried to commit more to covering the floor and set up Caitlin Tipping. However, they were unable to keep up with the fast pace or deal with the decisive moments during transitions.

Meanwhile, Japan played a solid match, running their plays cohesively, playing well in transition, and timing their blocks successfully. They dominated the match on all fronts, converting with 45 attacks and 7 blocks, apart from their massive haul from the service line.

Teams head to a rest and recovery day on Friday, August 26, as they await their respective match-ups for the quarterfinals set on Saturday, August 27, at Pasig City’s PhilSports Arena.
