Hangzhou, China, July 4, 2023 – Japan clinched their third victory in the 1st Asian Women’s U16 Volleyball Championship after a comfortable straight-set 25-9, 25-12, 25-4 win against Macao, China at China Textile City Sports Centre Gymnasium here on Tuesday afternoon.
Middle blocker and captain Yukuzi Baba scored 11 points from 7 attacks, one block and 3 aces for Japan.
Japan set the tone with their dominating attacks in the first set, leading all the way to 15-5. However, Macao, China showed no fear and sought for every little chance to score, featuring some tricky plays. Still, due to the distinct disadvantages of skills and combinations, Macao China had to surrender the first set 9-25.
Japan started the second set with some service errors, while Macao, China tightened their defense to trail narrowly 5-6. Afterwards, Japan improved their offense, unleashing thundering attacks and aces to seal the set 25-12, with Hikari Kudo firing a sharp shot in the last point.
The third set saw Japan dictate the rhythm with good combinations of attacks and defense, while Macao, China had poor reception and defense, failing to match the mighty attacks from the much stronger rivals. Japan quickly closed the set 25-4.
“We gradually improved during the whole process. However, we could have done better. I would give only 6 of 10 points for my team’s performance. As for the plan for the next battle, I believe, serving is important for us, And the mixture of blocking and digging is our strength. We want to show good defense to the audience.” said Saegusa Daichi, head coach of Japan.
