Taishi Onodera of Japan was in action for JT Thunders Hiroshima this weekend.
Tokyo, Japan, October 27, 2020 – After the second weekend of matches in the men’s V.League, three teams have a perfect 4-0 record. They are JT Thunders Hiroshima, Panasonic Panthers and JTEKT Stings. However, only JT Thunders Hiroshima have not lost a set through those four matches and that means that they are at the top of the standings.
While JT Thunders Hiroshima did sweep both matches against FC Tokyo this weekend, they were both close. Combined, the Thunders only scored one point more than FC Tokyo than the required two points needed to win a set. On Saturday middle blocker Taishi Onodera had 13, including 2 blocks and 2 aces. He followed on Sunday with 15, including 2 blocks to lead the Thunders. His Australian teammate Thomas Edgar had 18 (1 block) on Saturday and 12 (1 block) on Sunday. On Sunday, FC Tokyo needed every point from their Serbian opposite Premovic Petar. Petar finished with 24 points and 3 blocks in the loss.
Panasonic Panthers swept their weekend series against Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler 2-0. On Saturday, the Panthers got their scoring punch from Tsubasa Hisahara with 16 points on 13 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. On Sunday, Kunihiro Shimizu led the team with 18 points, including a block in the win. Australian Curtis Stockton had 19 points (an ace) in the loss for Oita on Sunday.
Yuji Nishida was his dominant self for the JTEKT Stings in their sweep of VC Nagano Tridents over the weekend. On Friday night, JTEKT needed five sets to win and nearly gave up a 2-0 set lead in the process. Nishida had 28 on 25 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. JTEKT’s new foreign signing Brazilian Felipe Fonteles had his first action off the bench with 10 kills. Indonesian Rivan Nurmulki in his first game for the Tridents did his best to match with 24 points on 20 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. In Saturday’s game, Nishida was unstoppable with 27 points, including 3 blocks and an ace in the Stings 3-0 win. Nurmulki had 15 points (a block and an ace) in the loss.
Bartosz Kurek was just as dominant for Wolfdogs Nagoya in their weekend sweep of Toray Arrows. Kurek went for 23 (2 blocks and an ace) on Saturday and then for 37, including a block and 3 aces. His final kill on Sunday ended the match 3-1 for the Wolfdogs. Hungarian Krisztian Padar had 30 (an ace) in the losing effort for the Arrows.
Osaka rivals Sakai Blazers and Suntory Sunbirds split their two matches over the weekend. Sakai taking Saturday’s match 3-1, while Suntory came from behind, down 2-0 on Sunday to win 3-2. The Sunday match was interesting as Sakai outblocked the Sunbirds 17-5, including 5 from Takashi Dekita. However the Sunbirds only had two hitting errors (outside of the blocked balls) and 18 more kills. Sakai had 12 hitting errors in the loss on Sunday. Masahiro Yanagida with 24 and Masashi Kuriyama with 26 carried the load in the comeback win for Suntory.
