Manila, Philippines, May 26, 2024 – Kazakhstan concluded their run in the Preliminary Round of the 2024 AVC Challenge Cup for Women with a straight-set win 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-14) against Hong Kong, China on Sunday afternoon at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
In their debut participation in the competition, Kazakhstan will now enter the Final Four as the second-ranked team in Pool B.
Captain Sana Anarkulova and Zhanna Syroyeshkina led the charge for the victors, scoring 22 points and 16 points respectively.
Kazakhstan dominated in all scoring fronts and posted commendable efficiency on their attacks. Their performance from the service line also stood out, as they amassed a total of 12 service winners.
Hong Kong, China put up a good battle, setting their lead hitters Shum Lam and Chim Wing Lam from the flanks. They scored on several good runs to combine for 18 points. However, the team could not fully address the opponents’ block. When they tried to vary their attacks as a workaround, they became prone to misfires.
Coach Rishat Gilyazutdinov always gave setter Irina Kuznetsova the start, given her caps and her leadership in this team which is slowly transitioning to a newer generation of Kazakh volleyball players.
“This new generation is helping raise the level of our volleyball. They have something new to offer which really helps our game. It is a good combination to bring our experience with their new approach to the sport,” she said.
“I am really happy and satisfied that I am here in this championship. I took some time off when I had my second child and I am delighted I can back playing with this level of success for the team,” Kuznetsova added.
Teams head toward rest and recovery on Monday, with the matches restarting on Tuesday for the semi-finals showdown. By Wednesday, a new champion will be determined to join the roster of winners in the AVC Challenge Cup.
