The Netherlands outlasted Korea in exhausting five sets to finish their 2021 FIVB Women’s Volleyball Nations League campaign in Rimini, Italy on a high on Sunday.
In a see-saw battle, the Netherlands started confidently to take the first set 25-20 before losing a close second set 23-25, winning the third set 25-18 to go down 22-25 in the fourth set, forcing a tie-breaker. Both sides still played well up to their level, but the Netherlands fared better to win the closely-contested decider 15-12 and match.
Nika Daalerop scored a match-high 30 points including 28 attacks for the Netherlands, while Park Jeongah led Korea with 24 points. Kim Yeon Koung and Lee Soyoung kept good company to assist with 20 and 18 points respectively.
Kim Yeon Koung said at the virtual Mixed Zone: “Actually, we were prepared to win this game, but their receiving was better than expected and we couldn’t block and defend well against their main attackers, so we didn’t manage to win this game.”
Anne Buijs of the Netherlands said: “We are so happy that the tournament is over for us and that we ended it with a victory, so we started to celebrate. It was a really tough game, but we really wanted to end the tournament with a win. Korea are a top team and it was a game full of ups and downs, but in the end we could win it. And everyone could see our celebration and happiness.”
