Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, January 7, 2020 – Korea started well on their road to Tokyo by claiming a straight-set 3-0 (25-18, 25-10, 25-9) victory over Indonesia on the opening day of 2020 AVC Women’s Tokyo Volleyball Qualification here at Chatchai Hall.
Korea met troubles from the beginning as they could not get used to the quick and diverse play of Indonesia. Both sides stuck to each other until 12-12 before Korea found their rhythm back to establish a 19-13 lead. Indonesia called a timeout but it did not make any difference as Korea maintained the gap and wrapped up the set in 25-18 following a mighty smash by Lee Jaeyeong.
At the beginning of the second set, Indonesia committed several service mistakes and failed to oppose pressure on the opponents’ reception. In return, star player captain Kim Yeon Koung gave them a lesson, as she led Korea with her destructive service including three aces in a row to widen the gap from 6-4 to 14-4. With no more suspense, Korea smoothly closed the second set in 25-10 following a killing spike by Park Jeongah.
The third set turned out to be a one-sided set as Korea fully controlled the situation. With a 5-0 start, they kept expanding the margin and finished the set in 25-9.
Star player captain Kim Yeon Koung registered a match-high 12 points for Korea including 5 spikes, 3 blocks and remarkable 4 aces. Lee Jaeyeong and Kim Su Ji followed to contribute 10 and 9 points respectively. Hangestri Pertiwi Megawati only scored team-high 6 points for Indonesia.
