Manama, Bahrain, May 21, 2023 – Kuwait Sporting Club took the fifth place at the 2023 Asian Men’s Club Volleyball Championship at Hall 1 of Isa Bin Rashid Stadium on Sunday following their magnificent come-from-behind 23-25, 29-27, 15-25, 25-18, 15-11 win against South Gas Sports Club, the team they went down in straight sets in the top 8 playoff clash earlier.
In the opening set, Kuwait Sporting Club tried to cope with the rivals’ quick attacks and solid defence, but still failed to make their mark. South Gas Sports Club gradually pulled their game together, counter-attacking well to snare the close first set 25-23.
In the second set, Kuwait Sporting Club gained the upper hand, which they won in a hotly-contested action 29-27.
The third set turned out to be one-way traffic when Kuwait Sporting Club were errors-strewn, allowing South Gas Sports Club several attacking opportunities. Leading for good 17-12, the Iraqi side found their rhythm and went on their fine form to win the set 25-15.
Both teams came all-out in the fourth set. South Gas Sports Club led initially 5-3 before Kuwait Sporting Club bounced back with attacks and terrific jump serves, which allowed the Iraqis difficulties to receive. The Kuwaitis bagged the set 25-18 for a 2-2 tie, forcing a tie-breaker.
In the decider, Kuwait Sporting Club led from the start with a 4-point lead at 7-3 and made short work of the rivals to win the tie-breaker 15-11.
Saber Kazemi chipped in with 34 points for Kuwait Sporting Club, 26 of them through deadly attacks, with teammates Salem Alsuwaid contributing 11 points. Yasir Muntadher, Todor Skrimov, and Challab Matraw Islam Sachit scored with double digits for South Gas Sports Club.
