LATHEEF RE-ELECTED AS VOLLEYBALL ASSOCIATION OF MALDIVES PRESIDENT

Malé, Maldives, February 12, 2025 – Mr Mohamed Latheef, himself AVC Executive Vice President and President of the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA), was re-elected as the Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) President during its Extraordinary Congress on Wednesday, February 12.

Following the successful election, Mr Latheef, who chaired the Wednesday’s Extraordinary Congress, will continue to lead VAM for another four-year term (2025-2028).

A total of 13 clubs were eligible to vote in the election consisting of Police Club, Dhivehi Sifainge Club, Addu Sports Club, Goodies Sports Club, Youth New Generation, Alma Sports Club, Club Volleyball, Volleyball Youth New Generation, Aspiration for All Initiative Sports Club, Sports Club City, Volleyball Family Association, Volleyball Academy, Club Half Line Linkage.

Out of the full 13 members, 11 participated in the election, seeing the election results as follows.

5. Mr. Abdulla Nasheed – Vice President Beach Volleyball

7. Ms. Aidha Abdul Hakeem – Vice President Female

8. Mr. Mohamed Sharaf – Executive Committee Member

9. Mr. Mohamed Fahmy – Executive Committee Member

10. Mr. Ahmed Nasheed – Executive Committee Member

11. Mr. Fathuhulla Waheed – Executive Committee Member

12. Mr. Safwan Ahmed – Executive Committee Member

13. Ms. Aishath Fatheenath – Executive Committee Member (Female)

Mr Mohamed Ramiz was also re-elected as the VAM Treasurer.

During the Congress, VAM President Mohamed Latheef proposed Mr Mohamed Saeed for the position of General Secretary, which was unanimously approved by the Executive Committee.

In his opening address, Mr Latheef welcomed the Members and expressed gratitude for their contributions to volleyball in the Maldives. He highlighted the achievements of VAM in 2024 and emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in advancing the sport. He also acknowledged outgoing Vice President Ali Ashraf for his contributions and encouraged the continued participation in volleyball development.

Mr Latheef further outlined VAM’s plans for 2025, emphasizing upcoming competitions and efforts to enhance opportunities for Maldivian players. He also extended appreciation to key stakeholders, including FIVB President Mr Fabio Azevedo, AVC President Mr Ramon Suzara, the Maldivian Minister of Sports Mr Abdulla Rafiu, Commissioner of Sports Mr Mohamed Tholal, and President Dr Mohamed Muizzu for their continuous support.

In his closing remarks, Mr Latheef congratulated the newly elected Members and reiterated the importance of strengthening sport at both the national and international levels. He urged the Committee to focus on competing in global tournaments and bringing home medals. Acknowledging the support of CAVA, AVC, and FIVB, he thanked FIVB Director for Asia & Oceania Mr Luis Alexandre Rodrigues for observing the Congress online.

Mr Latheef reaffirmed VAM’s commitment to working closely with the Maldivian Government to develop and promote volleyball, ensuring that future generations benefit from the association’s efforts.

The election process was conducted by a five-member Electoral Committee appointed for the purpose.

With a strong and dedicated team in place, the Volleyball Association of Maldives is set to continue its mission of promoting and developing volleyball across the country. Under the leadership of President Mohamed Latheef, VAM aims to strengthen local competitions, enhance international participation, and ensure the sport’s long-term growth in the Maldives.
