Jordan’s Batoul & Ghayd and Lebanon’s Farah & Angy complete the podium with silver and bronze

Lebanon’s Lara Al Nahi & Louna Khorbotly (pictured in the main photo) triumphed as the winners of the inaugural WAVA U20 Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship, the first ever women’s age-group beach volleyball competition in the Middle East that was held in Doha on Monday and Tuesday. Another Lebanese pair, Angelina Farah & Angy Lakkis, earned bronze, while Jordan’s Batoul Husein Ahmad Abdallah & Ghyad Alashoush picked up silver.
The 2024 WAVA U20 Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship podium in Doha
Seventh-seeded Lara & Louna cruised through the entire tournament without dropping a single set in five matches played. After sweeping their pool on Monday, the Lebanese pair moved swiftly through Tuesday’s playoffs. In the quarterfinals, they achieved an emphatic 2-0 (21-7, 21-8) win over Oman’s Al Hanoof Thani Saleh Al Araimi & Al Shyma Moatasim Ali Jan Moham Al Zadjali. Then, they followed up with a convincing 2-0 (21-6, 21-10) semifinal victory over third-seeded Hend Daaboul & Maguy Alshaikh of Syria.
In the gold medal showdown, Lara & Louna were challenged by Batoul & Ghayd, but once again celebrated in straight sets, 2-0 (21-11, 21-14), to reign supreme as the first WAVA U20 women’s zonal champions.
To reach the final, 14th-seeded Batoul & Ghayd won the all-Jordanian quarterfinal with Celina Haddad & Katrina Haddad by 2-0 (21-6, 21-14) and their semifinal against Farah & Angy in a 2-1 (20-22, 21-8, 15-8) comeback.
The 13th-seeded Lebanese duo bounced back with a 2-0 (21-15, 21-15) sweep of the third-place match against Hend & Maguy to snatch the bronze.
A total of 16 pairs, two each from Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria and Yemen took part in the 2024 WAVA U20 Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship in the Qatari capital.
The historic zonal championship was co-organized by the FIVB and supported by Olympic Solidarity as part of the IOC Youth Athlete Development Programme. It is expected to have a long-term impact on the young female hopefuls that took part in the event.
